What to do and see in Beijing, China: The Best Points of Interest & Landmarks

May 19, 2021 Natalie Tallman

Welcome to a capital city whose story goes back at least 3000 years. In Beijing, you'll find a wealth of history, both ancient (the Hall of Preserving Harmony, Summer Palace, Forbidden City) and more recent (Chairman Mao Memorial Hall, Tiananmen Square). For the best market experience, choose the Dirt Market over the touristy Silk Market. A visit to the Great Wall, the longest manmade structure in the world, is absolutely essential.

English speaking driver in Beijing

my name is John yellowcar (Zhang Yong Xin) and I'm from Beijing. I'm a local and I know Beijing and all spots around very well. I drove a taxi for nine years. My car is a new HONDA Odyssey with 7 seats (please look to the picture below). I'm a non-smoker and so my car is very clean. I use my car to bring my customers to all the nice spots and sightseeing in and around Beijing. If you like to use my car and me as the driver for a trip, you can call me or write me a message

Great communication before the trip and coordinating. We had a 15 hour layover in Beijing and were traveling with our 5 kids ranging in age from 2 years old to 15. The day we were there was the first snowfall for Beijing. But our brave and skilled driver still took use to the Great Wall of China. It was amazing. We got to sled down the the Wall. Despite the conditions, he got us there safely and even recommended a great restaurant while we were at the wall. He then returned us safely back to the airport with plenty of time. The van was clean and comfortable. We would use this company again. And we traveled in November of 2016 and I'd been meaning to write this review for awhile.

Juyongguan Great Wall

Reviewed By Mariana4624 - Albuquerque, United States

My daughter and I just returned from a great tour experience in China. One of the many highlights was our visit to one of the many sections of the Great Wall - Juyongguan Pass. This section had some steep climbs through varying step heights and provided some great views of the zig zags of the wall through the mountains. The weather was great, no rain, sun came up and temperature was in the mid 60s. Great time of year for this. This is an amazing feat of engineering and manpower. We took this tour with Intertrips when we purchased the Splendid China 10 Day guided tour through Groupon for less than $00 pp with flights included.

Beihai Park (Beihai Gongyuan)

Kubla Khan in 1260 took up residence in this palace, which today is a 168-acre park filled with historic buildings, restaurants and a lake.

Reviewed By jacksonleungcs - Singapore, Singapore

The park was built as part of the Imperial City of Yuan's new capital Dadu during the reign of Kublai Khan. I will recommend you make this as part of the Forbidden city tour. So when you exit 紫禁城, you get across to Jingshan Park via the underground connect and take a bird eye view of both the Forbidden city and the white tower of Beihai park before you get out from the east exit of Jiang Shan park and then walk 10 mins on foot to get to the Beihai park. While you are in the park, do take time to visit the Kuaixuetang Calligraphy Museum which built in 1775 with two halls in its courtyard. The structures was connected by painted verandas, on the eastern and western sides of which over 100 pieces of handwritings of 20 calligrapher living between the forth to the fourteenth century are showed ( see pix attached)..

Long Corridor at the Summer Palace

Reviewed By BillPNo1 - Friendswood, United States

We visited the Long Corridor of the Summer Palace and walked its entire length when we visited the Summer Palace. The Long Corridor - which runs from the central area of the palace grounds to the furthest tip of the grounds area - was fascinating because each section of the overhead, along the entire length is individually decorated and painted. It is quite interesting and beautifully done and definitely must be seen to be appreciated.

Bell and Drum Towers

This two-story arched wooden structure once held 25 drums which, in combination with bells in the Bell Tower, were once used to indicate the time of day. Only one drum remains today, which is beaten four times a day for 15 minutes.

Reviewed By tomsF5110SS - Canterbury, United Kingdom

This is a great building to view the surrounding area of the hutongs. We spent what little money it was (think 150CYN each) to visit both the Drum and Bell Tower. It was well worth the money! The views from the top were fantastic and you could walk around the top to see either the Drum or the Bell tower across the courtyard. While at the top of the tower, we were lucky enough to time it correctly and watch an arranged drum procession. This was also very good. It was a great event which was not shown or advertised anywhere else. One word of warning, there are lots of steps which are very steep. If you have trouble walking freely or struggle with steep steps, then I would urge on the side of caution. I would recommend going to this if you are in the area as it is a great part of the Beijing culture, and helps to show something that I have certainly not seen before.
