Birds of Prey Centre

Reviewed By andysgood - Northampton, United Kingdom

Great afternoon out , thoroughly enjoyable. Arrived for a Birds of Prey experience , quite a few in our group to start with and was not sure how much we were going to be able to do . However the staff were excellent in all people that wanted to handle the birds were given ample time and were able to spend time with different birds , Owls , Falcons and Hawks to mention a few. After a while the group was split into two one group continued with the birds while the others went to a flying display , then the roles were reversed . As for the flying display we were treated to standing in the arena firstly with an African owl flying and landing on your hand then afterwards an eagle do the same great to watch and take part in , again everybody had the opportunity. We also were able to watch the American Bald Eagle fly between the falconers. The staff were very friendly , helpful and knowledgeable and helped to make it a great time. Will come again.

Bedford Park is quite simply a stunning park with plenty of space for picnics (no BBQs!) and long walks with your friends. Picking up dog poo is an absolute must as this park is immaculate!

RSPB The Lodge Nature Reserve

Located on Bedfordshire's Greensand Ridge, RSPB The Lodge nature reserve and gardens has over 5 miles of trails, leading through tranquil woodland, an historic Iron Age hillfort, heathland and formal gardens. A hide looks over small pools where birds and other wildlife come to feed. The RSPB shop sells gifts, optics and bird food, and you can enjoy a freash sandwich or salad from the chiller, or a well-deserved ice cream or hot drink after your walk.

We decided to go and have a look at RSPB's head office, The description of the place is completely different to our local reserves.. The first thing we saw was a kestrel hovering while we was getting the cameras out. Following the path, autumn colour where amazing.. beautiful colours. Walking thought the first part of the woods, seeing the restoration of the rare environment in progress, fence posts being put in so the natural undergrowth controllers can be brought in (ponies). Walking up along the Greensand ridge the views through the trees are breath taking. The Iron Age Hill Fort takes a bit of imagination but you can see why it was there, Its a tangible link to the past that can be seen and touched. From the fort, the path twists and turns along the ridge then down into a valley, then up then down, a stunning path, steps, slopes, more steps, some steep.. the knees cry out for mercy a couple of times but ooohh so worth it. so much to see, Fungus, the sand stone cliff, the trees, the animals and birds... The garden when you get to the HQ building is lovely, There was a rhododendron in flower, all the way up here, in late Nov.. amazing. The Tree of Life is a brilliant idea.. the powerful feelings there is wonderful.. I hope people respect it. The Woodpecker trail was the last one we did,so much to look at with more stunning views, trees in full autumn dress..More climbing but worth it. We will go back, at a different time of year. On the minus side, No food available, apparently the supplier had gone, we had to go back to the town to find something for lunch.. It was not a problem. Shop well stocked, staff helpful.

English School of Falconry

Reviewed By 677JamesD677 - London, United Kingdom

I was bought a half day experience for my birthday. We (my wife was a spectator) arrived a bit early so we could look at the birds and what a lot to see. I don't think I have ever seen so many in one place from the Little Owl, through all the the Owls to Hawks to Eagles. All were beautiful. We were able to fly a Barn Owl, Blue Chilean Eagle, Bald Eagle and Golden Eagle. We also able to handle a number of other birds including a Red Tailed Kite and feed pelicans! Walking along pulling a dead deer while the Golden Eagle struck is something I will never forget. Thanks to Owen, Sarah and Julie for a truly memorable experience.

Beautiful woodland close to Houghton House. Great for a leisurely walk. The hills are quite steep and can be muddy and slippery if it has rained. The bluebells in early spring are abundant and look beautiful. They are a site of scientific interest.

This is an old established wood opposite the road to the Glenn Miller museum ,there have been new trees planted in a field close by .unsuitable for children's buggies as the ground has lumps and rough surfaces. The road leading to it from Clapham is concrete and was built for access to twinwoods and thurleigh airfields .there are wild flowers birds including jays nesting here and great views of the surrounding countryside .

We came here as a party of 11 in our school minibus and had the most fantastic day. Here are some comments from my students.. ‘The monkeys were jumping all over our minibus..it was so cool!’ ‘I loved the giraffes, there were LOADS of them! And cute baby ones !’ ‘ The rhinos with the big bottoms were my favourites’ ‘ I liked the ice-cream and going shopping in the gift shop’ ‘ I liked going on the swan boats’ We all had an amazing day. Everywhere was very clean and all of the animals looked very well cared for. Can highly recommend as an excellent day trip for schools. The school admission prices are very generously discounted too.
