Les Jardins du Chateau de la de la Ballue

Near Mont St Michel, the Gardens of La Ballue shimmer “like a jewel set in the French countryside by some celestial authority.” (V. Seguin, Résidences Décoration). These gardens, which have been classified as Historical Monuments of France, offer a labyrinthine series of pathways around 17th century terraces. DESCRIPTION Not far from historic Mont Saint Michel, there is an enchanted garden, built on 17th century terraces overlooking the Couesnon Valley. The first garden, in the mannerist Italian style, was created by the architect Paul Maymont, sending the visitor on a journey of discovery including thirteen “rooms” of greenery, (the attrape (trick) grove, the green theatre, the maze). And at the end of the linden alley, there is a French-style garden by François-Hébert Stevens, a splendid accompaniment to the golden granite southern facade of the Chateau Louis XIII. Here, topiary art and contemporary statues are displayed in perfect harmony. The gardens have been classified as a Historical Monument, and have also received the label Jardin Remarquable and Label Qualité Tourisme and the gardens are maintained with complete respect for the environment. New this season: the gardens of the old moats, with a botanical collection of boxwoods trees, rhododendrons and a large pound with animals. Brochures for the visitors in french, english and german. Educational brochures for children, 6 - 8 and 9 - 11 years old, in both French and English. Gift shop and tea room. Throughout the year there are many events including sculpture exhibitions, classical music festivals, a contemporary dance festival (end of June), a special topiary art weekend ( end of May). Nice B § B in the château.
