Beautiful area to hike, with many different trails to take: some shaded and some in the open sun. I especially love the trails that pass the stunning blue water. This is also a popular place for kayaking and for bringing dogs to play in the lake. Highly recommend as a day trip!

If you are a local in the southern NJ beach area, you likely know about Tices Shoal. It's located at the southern end of Island Beach State Park by land, or directly across the bay from Forked River by boat. On any given summer day, boats head out to the shoal in Barnegat Bay and anchor up anywhere along a 1 mile or so stretch of water along the shoreline. The water is typically 2-4 ft. deep. There is a mixture of grass and sandy bottom depending on where you anchor. The sandy bottom makes for a better experience. While some areas of the shoal party harder than others, there is plenty of room for everyone to anchor in an area that suits them. Tices does NOT get nearly as crazy as what you've likely seen from "F-Cove" on "Jersey Shore". The NJ State Police and Ocean County Sheriff are always out there to keep troublemakers in check. If you forget to bring your lunch, the hot dog boat is setup and they also ride around with ice cream. If you want to take a break from the boat/party scene, there is a set of stairs and walkway you can use to walk over to the ocean side of Island Beach State Beach. This is a great way to take a swim in the ocean. You will be charged $3 per person for this beach access, so bring cash! Wet bills are accepted. As a local, WE would like to request the following: - Be respectful of the families out there, especially with young children. Think twice before cursing at the top of your lungs, deciding to strip down in plain sight, or starting a drunken brawl. - Play your music at a respectful level. No one else needs or wants to hear your music. Keep the rap/club music up north if you need to show off your stereo - Make sure you know how to handle your boat before venturing in too close. It gets crowded in there and the last thing you want to do is start or end your day hitting someone elses boat - If you're on a jetski, don't blow right through the floatillas. Not only will you be putting people in danger, you're likely to get a ticket from the police. - Pay attention to the tide charts. You don't want to get hung up on the sand at low tide. - Your trash goes in your trash on the boat. Not in the water. Not only is littering in the water not good for the environment, you are putting people's feet in jeopardy. - Bring plenty of water. Watching someone do shots of Fireball and then see them fall out from dehydration is not as funny as you might think. If you stay around into the later hours, the sunset is amazing! Enjoy!

This part has been redone and is better than ever! The area is perfect for the family with picnic areas with shaded areas. People are always friendly and there is just so much to do. The dock is available for either fishing or crabbing - (we used to do this when we had young children). The view of the Bay and across the Bay are beautiful. There is a great playground and a splash park which is so much fun! There is even a beach with a nature trail! On a warm day, the breezes are beautiful! All in all - a great day out - if you check the schedules in the local papers, there are concerts there often! This is FREE!
