Bayonne's Cathedral, with its twin spires and surrounded by narrow streets really dominates the old part of this lovely city. While the Gothic cathedral is impressive from the outside (including the cloisters, the flying buttresses and the twin sprires - which in fact were not finished until the 19th century), it was the church's interior we found truly beautiful. Some superb stained-glass windows and exquisite wall paintings to be seen.

Bayonne, a charmer of a medieval French Basque town, has a lovely river called the Adour, that flows from high in the Pyrenees mountains through the town and moves on to empty into the nearby Bay of Biscay. The Adour competes with the imposing 13th century cathedral for charm and I was tempted to take a river boat ride to look at the town from the water, a no doubt beautiful view. I didn't have time to do this but if I return in the future I will make that a part of my visit.
