What to do and see in Basmanny, Central Russia: The Best Art Galleries

September 4, 2021 Deane Carmody

The political, scientific, historical, architectural and business center of Russia, Moscow displays the country's contrasts at their most extreme. The ancient and modern are juxtaposed side by side in this city of 10 million. Catch a metro from one of the ornate stations to see Red Square, the Kremlin, the nine domes of St. Basil's Cathedral, Lenin's Mausoleum, the KGB Museum and other symbols of Moscow's great and terrible past, then lighten up and shop Boulevard Ring or people watch in Pushkin Square.

GROUND Solyanka

Solyanka VPA — a project in a genre known in the world as artist-run space — that is, many of the principles and criteria are a bit subjective, which doesn’t prevent the curators and artists working on a project from moving in their own independent direction.Solyanka is located exactly where blood flows on Moscow vessels — in the heart of city life, just 5 minutes from the Kremlin, right on the Ivanovskaya hill. All around you can see temples which miraculously survived 1917, as if the destroyer that was the twentieth century never rocked the city. Almost everything is almost exactly the way it once was. Here — as in few places in Moscow — you can see the surviving medieval tricky side streets which are twisted into complex knots making lanes run either down or up the hill. The word «Solyanka» comes from the time of Ivan the Terrible and his Salty yard. Architects Sergeyev, Sherwood and Guerman built the house that inhabits our museum in the early XX century. They managed to complete what the developers required. They maximized the use of space, which had quite an intricate form, and they increased the size of the building both in height and depth. The house is now considered a monument of neoclassicism.

Watercolor School of Sergeya Andriyaki

The building was constructed by English architect Hippener in 1898 for a Lutheran children’s shelter, and was reconstructed and improved. The Moscow state specialized school of water colour with a museum and exhibition centre opened in the capital in 1999 with the support of the Government of Moscow and Mayor Yu.M. Luzhkov. The art director of this educational institution is Sergey Nikolayevich Andriaka, People’s Artist of Russia, and Correspondent Member of the Russian Academy of Arts. The main aims of the school are development of classical water colour painting, reference to an academic system of training, and acquisition, preservation and transfer to future generations the experience and traditions of old masters. Teaching is conducted by S. Andriaka’s own technique where the teacher works together with pupils on one task. Personal example is the fastest form of learning. For the Water Colour School, a beautiful ancient private residence in the centre of Moscow, near to the old German area of Lefortovo was chosen. In the shortest time, the construction which took place in virtual ruins turned into a fine three-storey palace. Spacious class rooms and creative workshops filled with natural light were created. Exhibition halls of 700 sq.m. are equipped to world-class engineering and technical requirements and correspond to required norms of a museum microclimate, fire safety, protection and illumination. This actively allows the Water Colour School to develop two mutually close directions: pedagogical and museum exhibition activity. Founder — Culture Committee of the Government of Moscow.
