Porta Coeli International Art Gallery & Academy

Porta Coeli is a cultural reality in the Basilicata region, a private museum experience and Study Centre for Mediterranean Culture, located in the prestigious seventeenth-century “Palazzo Rapolla” in Venosa, a fascinating small town in southern Italy, renowned for its history and exquisite artistic vocation. Porta Coeli is not merely a place: it is an avant-garde idea generated and nourished in an Italian province, quite far from huge capitals. It embraces the concept of cultural resistance against the most disturbing of today’s obstacles: nihilism and surrender. The idea on which it is based is that art is not just a mere aesthetic exercise but also an instrument for growth and comparison is still valid, constantly allowing new opportunities of personal and professional development. As a non-profit reality, we guarantee equity and attention to social issues avoiding speculations.

Entry was a little bureacratic (waiting while the couple in front had a long conversation and then no change for 20 euros so I had to go to bar across the road) but once inside ... it was spectacular. Wonderful frescos and paintings by Carlo Levi on the ground floor and then a wonderful exhibition of local medieval art on the uppper floor (I think this is temporary). Two hours well spent!
