Barrydale is a village located on the border of the Overberg and Klein Karoo regions of the Western Cape Province in South Africa. Named after Joseph Barry, a well known merchant of the 19th century it is situated at the northern end of the Tradouw's pass which winds its way through the mountains to Swellendam.

Some of the best pizza around. Excellent beers with a selection for novice to serious stout types. Here you’ll find great hospitality, food that’s simplistic but not shy on flavor which mimics the excellent beers. Saison and Amber being a winner for me. Prices much like the rest of Barrydale are conservative rather than cosmopolitan. A must for the love of beer and a local brew (coffee too)

After the disappointing poor art in Swellendam we were pleasantly surprised by this gallery. I love the fact that everything is recycled. It is inspiring to see how creative one can be with waste. The kids loved it. I was happy to meet the artists that created the chandelier for the White House. What a character! Full of life, peace and creativity. I could have spent the whole day talking to him.

Hardy Grun arrived on South African shores 30 years ago from Germany ready for a new adventure. Fancying himself a bit of a wheeler dealer he landed at the then Sea Point Flea market peddling reasonably priced African Art and Curious. Over time Hardy evolved into a highly respected and knowledgeable dealer and collector of high quality authentic African Art and Gifts. After relocating to Barrydale eight years ago Hardy still maintained close contact with suppliers and friends from yesteryear, guaranteeing a steady supply of quality goods from all sub Saharan countries, still reasonably priced. Hardy and his wife Jenny, who hails from Shanghai, welcome you to visit and are able to converse fluently in German, English, Afrikaans, Chinese, French, Spanish and a bit of Portuguese and Italian. Hardys Memories of Africa is recommended by Tour Guides as the No 1 stop for African Art and Gifts in the Western Cape. Shipping of larger items and orders by surface mail to most countries are facilitated.
This shop is an Aladins cave and have nick nacks to suit your mood. The African masks with their vivid colours can certainly brighten up a place in your home and makes a good rememberance of your visit to Africa.

A wide variety of new and second hand books for sale. The shop specialises in literature from South Africa.
Best book shop in the country. Anton is a wealth of knowledge, you can spend hours browsing in this house. Well done Anton. There is some real gems to be found here, and what is nice is that all the books are in good condition.

Locals like to tell the story of Ronnie’s Shop, which Ronnie was fixing up to be a farm stand. During construction Ronnie’s friends played a prank on him by painting the word "sex" on his sign. Instead of a farm stand, he left the sign as it was and opened this pub.
Cold beer, good company, dont pass Ronnies by, an absolute cult classic bar..Perhaps the best burgers you will ever taste...love it

We visited in our previous trip in January and thoroughly enjoyed reading about the history of John Barry and his wines and his part played in making trade routes accessible from Barrydale to Breede river to Struisbaai. Or 2 oceans

We had dinner, with my wife having rump steak and a chicken schnitzel for myself. Very tasty with a good cheese sauce. Prices were not bad.
