Barcelona feels a bit surreal – appropriate, since Salvador Dali spent time here and Spanish Catalan architect Antoni Gaudí designed several of the city’s buildings. Stepping into Gaudí’s Church of the Sacred Family is a bit like falling through the looking glass - a journey that you can continue with a visit to Park Güell. Sip sangria at a sidewalk café in Las Ramblas while watching flamboyant street performers, then create your own moveable feast by floating from tapas bar to tapas bar.

I was so lucky to stumble upon this historic library! Quiet and serene, if you're a history buff you'll definitely want to stop by and check it out. The clerks there are very helpful and the collection is fascinating.

The best variety of English books in Barcelona. And with so many secondhand books, it's easy on your pocket too. The people who run it are exactly as I want my bookshop keepers to be; they leave you alone to browse as you like, and lose yourself in their big selection. I believe they can order books for you too, if you are looking for something specific. I've been dipping into their shop for years. You can exchange your old books forcredit, and keep that on their account. I love this system as it means when I don't have cash for books, I know I can still get a book. During this lockdown I discovered, to my joy, that you can also buy books from their website. Nothing beats a quiet afternoon browsing books, but when you can't get there, it's good to know you can still buy books from this lovely, local shop.
