A Buddhist monastery dating from the 8th c, the area is the country’s most impressive archaeological site. It is massive at some 27 acres. Built by Dharmapala, the second Pala king, it had 177 monastic cells. The terraced central temple was done in cruciform shape, measuring a colossal 922' by 918'. The grounds are worth a stroll. The colour of the bricks would make for great photography in the late afternoon. There is a small museum on sitte.

If you want to explore some place full of wonder and history at a same time you need to visit Maynamati Ruins. This is a vast place full of historical back ground. It is said that this place was called "Rajar Bari" (King's Palace) later called as "Shalban Bihara" local people call this place as "Shalban Bihar" This name is came from the name of the Ruler Deva Dynasty. It was ruled by them during mid 7th to mid 8th century A.D. This large square monastery is now buried under the ground but it's structure is visible from outside. There are 115 cells and a dominant central shrine and a number of subsidiary shrines and many more rooms or chapels access through its monumental gateway on the north. It was not only a monument but also an administrative center and university complex. This place is more than seven hundred years old! Can you imagine yourself standing in the middle of seven Hundred year old place! where you will find a connection of life from you to the ancient Buddhist. All the valuable terracotta and statues are kept into the museum beside that place. You will need to buy tickets to enter both places, i forgot to mention it earlier. I spend more than 1 hour in the Museum as there were lots of things kept nicely. From the coin, used ornament, their belongings and all the statues of God and Goddesses are the most attractive things of that museum. While walking in the middle of the shrine you will feel the presence of some ancient people through the walls and their ruins. I love to visit that place when ever i went to Comilla. I hope you will enjoy that place too if you are a lover of history and nature.
