The museums of Lisbon celebrate the rich history and culture of this Portuguese capital city. The Maritime Museum is perfect for kids (and grown-ups!) who adore all things nautical, while the Casa-Museu Dr. Anastácio Gonçalves is a hidden gem of colorful artwork. To fully appreciate the city’s dramatic stone architecture you can take a guided walking tour, or customize your own tour, making sure to visit the Padrao dos Descobrimentos, the Mosteiro dos Jeronimos, and the UNESCO World Heritage site the Torre de Belem.

The Luvaria Ulisses was not ordinary shop for all kinds of reasons. First, it was tiny, having the capacity for one, or maybe two folks in it at a time. Then, it was beautiful, all adorned with red and gold ornamental design. And three, the gloves were stunning. My sister was taken care of by the proprietor, who placed her elbow on a round padded pillow, made especially for the elbows of glove-tryer-oners. Then the saleswoman looked at my sister's hand and could immediately tell what size she was. Impressive. A box was taken out of this long narrow hallway that went back into the shop. George pointed out that it reminded him very much of Olivander’s wand shop in Happy Potter. So true! So the gloves were extracted and then “opened” by the lady with this tool that looked like a large wooden tweezer thing. She stuck it in every finger of the glove and popped them open. And then finally, the glove was placed on the waiting hand. And they fit, well, like a glove. Finally the newly purchased gloves were placed in a satiny bag, which was then placed in a fancy shopping bag, and then given to my sister. All of this was fascinating and very very fun to watch. Loved this shop, even though I wasn't the purchaser!

This store is olive oil amazing, and we loved it! Located a few minutes walk from the Cathedral, Olistori specializes in Portuguese olive oil and other olive products. The owner operators are happy to educate you about Portuguese olive oil, and their enthusiasm is infectious. There’s lots of different olive oils and related products for sale, and we thought many would make unique gifts to take back home. (Also, if you’re into the idea of local foods as gifts to take back home, there’s another store nearby which offers a great selection of jellies, jams, and other Portuguese food products.)

Benamôr was founded in 1925 in Lisbon by a pharmacist who created miraculous ointments at Campo Grande nº189. His handmade skin recipes were based on natural ingredients and packaged in adorable art deco tubes. It was an instant hit! Adopted by all Lisbon Belles throughout the 20th century, including Queen Amélia. Benamôr remains today one of Portugal’s most beloved beauty brand.
We stopped in while walking around Lisbon. The set up/decor of the shop is very cute. The products are high quality and very reasonably priced for being nice beauty products. They even have a line of products that are pastel de nata scented. Would recommend trying the rose oil.
