The second most populous town in North Germany, Bremen brings the high-tech, science and space industries together beneath a truly metropolitan backdrop. In a city where innovation, beauty and sophistication meet, it's impossible not to feel the life force. In this 1,200-year-old Hanseatic city, visit the Schlachte Promenade on the River Weser, the full-sized Columbus Space Module of the International Space Station and the Universum Science Center. Oh, and "Hanseatic" refers to an alliance of trading cities in the 13th-17th centuries. But you probably knew that.

We did not expect the museum to be as big as it is. It is really easy to spend 4 hours here. Most of the information boards are German only, which can be difficult. Some of the information screens were not working properly. But nevertheless was this a really great experience with a lot of interesting facts and information in a beautiful setting for almost no money.

For 17 days every October, about 4 million revelers arrive at Bremer Freimarkt to ride ferris wheels, roller coasters, and ghost trains and feed on fried dough, spicy liquorice, and smoked eel. One of the oldest fairs in Germany, the event first took place in 1035. Of course, it's changed a great deal over that time, with blacksmiths, jugglers, and storytellers giving way to fireworks, cotton candy, and a parade of creatively and colorfully decorated floats. The modern version of Freimarkt runs with delirious energy, as merrymakers sway to rock bands in tents and zip among more than 300 attractions on the neon-lit fairscape.
