Holy Trinity Long Melford Church

Reviewed By R6472KXjanec - Suffolk, United Kingdom

The church is set on the top of Long Melford Green just to the side of Kentwell Hall - also well worth a visit, along with Melford Hall (National Trust) just across the road. This church is stunning and with the lovely lady chapel at the end is the largest church in the country that isn't a Cathedral. The beautiful stain glass windows tell a story and include characters from Alice in Wonderland and Beatrix Potter. (Melford Hall is where Beatrix Potter used to stay with her animals and they house the original Jemima Puddleduck.) The church has guided tours and a shop. Ensure you visit this beautiful church on your walk around Long Melford - so many stay on the High Street and don't go any further than the bridge opposite the Bull Hotel. It is surrounded by beautiful countryside where you can walk for miles.

Arger Fen & Spouse's Vale

Reviewed By 771adriann - London, United Kingdom

Arger Fen and Spouses Vale is a great place to walk at all times but as this time of year, when the bluebells are at their peak and the wild garlic is coming through has to be the best time. Very well looked after and wonderful to see how the bluebells are coming through in the areas where the brambles have been cut back. Thanks to all the volunteers. The wood is a good place for a stroll, but please keep to the paths, but an extended walk into Spouses Vale is although worth the effort.

Kentwell Hall

A 50 year restoration project The House: part original Tudor, with later classical elements, mixed with the owners' personal style. Tudor portraits, interesting artefacts and historic tapestries make this a family home with a difference. The Gardens: romantic moats, extensive lawns, walled gardens, massive clipped yews, espaliered fruit trees and giant cedars surround the House. Over 30 acres of tranquil breathing space, with a surprise to delight around every corner. The Moat House: this rare survivor of a 15th Century service building rises sheer from the moat and contains our working dairy, bakery, brewhouse and stillroom. We septuagenarians went to Kentwell Hall, for the first time, to the lambing & Spring bulb walk event. at the weekend. It was a perfect March day, plenty of sunshine and not too warm for walking. We enjoyed every bit our day out. The woodland walk and swathes of daffodils alongside the moat were a delight. We heard and saw a nuthatch calling from a tree top, listened to great tits and watched numerous brimstone butterflies. We marvelled at the great cedars on the cedar lawn, tried the human sundial (it worked!) and sat on a bench in the sunshine in the walled garden, admiring the wonderful Pied Piper topiary. We tried everything; the dark and spooky ice house, the fascinating Camera Obscura and made a mental note to return in the summertime to see the walled garden again, the sunken garden, fish pond and rose garden etc. We joined the families to aah and ooh over the newborn lambs and saw the biggest pigs we've ever seen, along with their two-week old piglets. We took 'framed' photos in in the barn, explored the pottery wood, which we thought would be interesting on re-creation days and also the forge, which again, we would like to see being used. Our lunch of vegetable soup was delicious. The staff were even able to rustle up a gluten-free roll for me (extra points for that!). There was so much for children to do too. The little adventure playground with its unusual games looked great fun, as did the Storybook Trail. We finally dragged ourselves away at 3.30pm, promising ourselves a summer visit when we can view the house as well as making a return visit to the gardens.

We spent an hour exploring the Guildhall, which has had an amazing history - it's transformed itself over the centuries over and over, happily rescued from decay by the National Trust and now home to excellent exhibits.

The Church of St Peter & St Paul

Reviewed By Big_Jeff_Leo - St Helens, United Kingdom

We were blown away at the view when we entered the main path to the church - you can see why this is a Grade 1 Listed Building that is regarded as one of the finest examples of Late Perpendicular Gothic architecture in England. The impressive tower is 141 feet tall and the interior has some outstanding fittings, including a painted rood screen dating from about 1330 and an octagonal font also from the 14th century. If you visit the wonderful village of Lavenham then make sure that you do not miss this outstanding church.

St. Mary's Church

Reviewed By MagsB57 - Suffolk, United Kingdom

We are not residents of Hadleigh but knew we had to locate St Marys Church to buy our programmes for the Hidden Gardens event. Once we parked we looked up to see an amazing church spire & decided to head for the church which turned out to be St Mary's. It is a beautiful church & worth a visit. The volunteers within the church were exceptionally helpful. We hope the funds from this event supported church well.
