The region is beautiful to visit and the Geopark Center in Arouca, very modern and informative, with enthusiastic and helpful staff. Good place to get started, since they explain the "birth-giving" stones and hand out maps of the area and of the Paiva Walkways. Definitely check it out!

Pateira lagoon and the surrounding areas are a unique place! Is one of the largest natural freshwater lagoons in the Iberian Peninsula, an wetland of national and international importance, classified as a RAMSAR area and included in the NATURA 2000 network. Our sadly short visit to Costa Nova was with a booked your with Living Tours. Our guide Goncalves was excellent and explained the history of Costa Nova and the Fisherman's Cottages which were absolutely delightful. There was a market on the afternoon we arrived but we only had 30minutes their so a very quick wander. Would have loved to have stayed longer. Definitely worth a visit, again about 45 minutes from Porto and literally five minutes from Aveiro.
