Once known for smog, traffic and tacky architecture, Athens is a city reformed thanks to fortunes brought by the 2004 Summer Olympics. Spotless parks and streets, an ultra-modern subway, new freeways, an accessible airport and all signs in perfect English make the city easily negotiable. Meriting more than a stopover en route to the islands, sophisticated Athens sites include many pillars of Western history, from the Acropolis to the Temple of Olympian Zeus, as well as treasures in the National Archaeological Museum.

A delightful hands-on cooking lesson and dinner; be initiated by the Chef into Greek cooking secrets with easy instructions and plenty of “hands on” preparation and cooking. But the best of all is the sumptuous dinner that you will have with the rest of your “classmates” at the end of the lesson.
I took this cooking course with my family and boyfriend while visiting Athens and had an incredible time learning simple yet elegant and traditional Greek dishes from chef Sophia. We made 7 unique dishes and I walked away with new techniques to try in my own kitchen! The course was fast paced and exciting with everyone actively participating and Sophia made the course special by incorporating methods she learned from the women in her family. I believe cooking is a great way to really immerse oneself in the culture of a country and I highly recommend this cooking school as we had a phenomenal evening drinking wine, conversing and making beautiful Greek dishes. The restaurant itself is beautiful with a stunning view of the acropolis and the wait staff are also incredible and perfectly complimented the evening we had!

Get to know the wonderful world of Mediterranean cuisine; the herbs, the fresh vegetables, the choice meats that we always use and learn the basics on how to prepare a full Greek dinner with easy to follow recipes and plenty "hands on" preparation and cooking. The cooking course includes starters like eggplant salad, tzatziki, traditional seasonable pie, dolmadakia, Greek salad and a main course. Plenty of choices for vegetarians also.
We did the cooking class with my 8-year old daughter and 4 other guests. Our instructor, Catherine, was doing her first solo class and she handled it like a pro. While she gave instructions and explanations, she also wove in family tales and explanations of Greek food culture. The class is easy - if you can use a cutting board and a cheese grater, you're there. My daughter handled everything that involved lemons (cutting, juicing and zesting) or squeezing the daylights out of something. The event is held inside a special room in the restaurant and then the party moves to an outside table for the meal. The outside table was comfortable even after dark in March - they have external gas heaters and a plexiglass barrier wall. All of the actual cooking of the final product is handled by the kitchen - there is no exposure to hot cooking surfaces for the guests. The bathrooms are spotless and there are plenty of hand-washing opportunities. I'm serious about coming hungry - the alternative is to have a place with a fridge and a microwave. For guests who do not eat lamb, there are normally one or two vegetarian options that the kitchen can prepare. Service was excellent even when the restaurant filled to capacity. The staff was EXTREMELY kid-friendly. The location is easy to walk to and a safe walk back to the hotel afterwards. There is an easy taxi drop-off area just around the corner.

We did a cooking class with the Greek Kirchen on our last day in Greece. Our instructors were so knowledgeable, friendly and funny! We learned SO much in just a couple hours and the food we made cake delicious! The the place was clean, warm and inviting. Our little trip to the market was such a really neat experience! We were emailed our recipes for all the dishes we prepared and I cannot wait to start making them! Our teacher was Vasia and she just made the class so fun and interesting! Ed also had an assistant Sylvia helping our and she was very helpful. It was such an awesome experience and I definitely would recommend the Greek Kitchen cooking classes to anyone going to Athens that might be interested in learning how to cook authentic Greek food!

Onion Athens is a place, where learning to cook traditional Greek recipes is approached differently – where the focus is on learning by doing, using what you have, what’s in the season – and most importantly by following true, traditional recipes the exact way we were taught by our greek mothers and grandmothers. We offer a truly hands-on cooking experience combined with a fun dinner party environment. Just like getting an invitation from a local Greek friend! At Onion Athens you learn the art of cooking greek meals, from the very first cut to the very last taste. Let's cook!
All my mom wanted for her 80th was to go to Greece and in Athens see the big sights and do a cooking class to make Mousaka. The Onion and Mariefi did not disappoint. We chose to do a class with others which i recommend. It was so fun meeting other people. It was coincidently walking distance from our hotel the Electra Metropolis. It was a great way to spend a night instead of going out to eat. We were hands on and ate a great meal.
