Kitora Tumulus(special historic site)was built between the end of the7th century to the beginning of the 8th century, and is a tumulus that has a stone chamber that uniquely displays mural paintings drawn in the style of continental Asia. Thus far, the mound, stone chamber, and mural paintings of the tumulus have been studied in detail, and repair work has been applied for their preservation. The Kitora Tumulus Mural Experiential Museum Shijin no Yakata is a hands-on facility where visitors can learn about Kitora Tumulus and its mural paintings in an easy-to-understand, enjoyable manner. It also provides an introduction to the Ancient Asuka period, when Kitora Tumulus was built.
This new free exhibition centre is well planned. You can download a free app on your phone using free WiFi there which is very informative. It covers the paintings, astrological chart & Chinese horoscope found in the stimuli, both the history & the techniques to save them. Allow 1-2 hours. There is a small cafe & shop. The park also covers the farming life in the same period as the tomb & the introduction of rice to japan. All really good

Two hours by car from Osaka into pretty mountainous scenery is this tomb consisting of 30 huge stones reminiscent of megalithic sites in Europe. Located within a park (free parking but 300 yen to visit tomb) the tomb is built on a small man made hill outside of which is a moat. More exciting was to be able to walk down the passage and into the tall tomb itself. Pleasant restaurant and cafes nearby.
