A striking red gate along the water designates the entrance to this ancient shrine, perched atop Mt. Komagatake, and reachable by cable car or foot.
this serene lakeside shrine has everything - towering cedars, a beautiful torii gate on the shore of lake ashi, and a main shrine complex up a steep flight of stairs to make your pilgrimage worthwhile! there's usually a line to have a picture under the lakeside gate, but waiting is worthwhile and pleasant in the shade. don't be shy about exploring along the lakeshore after you get your photo. remember that this is a place of worship, so act accordingly while you're here.

The Hakone Sekisho (Checkpoint) was one of the most important and famous Sekisho throughout Japan. The Sekisho officials carried out severe inspection of travelers especially women between 1619 and 1868. The Hakone Sekisho was perfectly restored in 2007.
Those who have studied some Japanese history, or art (ukiyo e), have learned of the Tokaido road between Edo and Kyoto, being one of the 5 roads connecting Edo with the provinces by which the daimyo and his entourage needed to periodically travel. It is so interesting to see how the Tokaido road passed along the southern edge of Lake Ashinoko and through this checkpoint, now reconstructed on its original site. Of particular interest to us was the fear that the female members of the daimyo would escape from their mandatory residence in Edo to return to their husbands/fathers in the provinces. Apparently this checkpoint was tasked with ensuring that women were carefully evaluated (by face, characteristic skin marks, etc.) to ensure these noble women did not escape!
