I thought that we were going along to some small zoo in a small town in Hokkaido. Turned out to have many exhibits with most animals seemingly enjoying themselves despite there being snow on the ground - even the African ones. Usually one expects animals to be sleeping all the time but here they were up and about. Loved the different viewpoints for the "dancing hippo" and of course the penguin walk in the snow right in front of you. Well worth the trip - we actually took time off specifically to visit i.e. not a stopover for something to do, as we had seen a Japanese drama story based on the zoo

I went to Hokkaido in the dead of winter and booked a trek with Clark Horse Garden. I found them through the internet when I was looking for an activity for the day after visiting the zoo. They're friendly, speak English and accommodating. I got picked up at the Sakuraoka Stn. (a quaint 1-car train that runs roughly once an hour) and after a bit of coaching in the pen, I enjoyed a leisurely horse trek in the snow. I was given a mild-mannered and friendly little mare called Marie. The horses are well-trained, did the same thing so many times they know the drill, so basically all you need to do is make sure you don't fall off the saddle. LOL We moseyed along the trail, went through the forest and pasture. The pasture was situated on a higher level and the winter view was fantastic. Horse trekking in Hokkaido is a great experience.
