Lingering over pain au chocolat in a sidewalk café, relaxing after a day of strolling along the Seine and marveling at icons like the Eiffel Tower and the Arc de Triomphe… the perfect Paris experience combines leisure and liveliness with enough time to savor both an exquisite meal and exhibits at the Louvre. Awaken your spirit at Notre Dame, bargain hunt at the Marché aux Puces de Montreuil or for goodies at the Marché Biologique Raspail, then cap it all off with a risqué show at the Moulin Rouge.

Since 2000, the year of its creation, the gallery Artima shows the public a coherent group of works built around two main axes. It is a part of artists working on the concept of the city and urbanity and whose works have several original urban routes. The second group involves artists who are in the world of pop culture whether through the use of a technical issue of this movement or by the dissemination in their works of emblematic Hollywood icons. Both lines of research are not segregated and some artists of the gallery may have a work that fits at the intersection of these two worlds. Examples of work Charles Fazzino which is at the same time part of Pop art and a reflection on the city and its representation. The city, because it is always changing, constantly bubbling, is perhaps even more today than yesterday, a veritable laboratory for artists. The close links between the world of urban and pop culture have been our guide to define the artistic line of the gallery.

This place is temporarily closed. The former home of the 19th-century author Victor Hugo is now a museum with exhibits on his life.
My husband has read all of the novels by Victor Hugo ( in translation I need to add) so it was a nice experience for him to see the house where he wrote many of his books and plays. Victor Hugo lived in this house at Place des Vosges before his exile in Guernsey and on his return to Paris he lived elsewhere. The rooms of various houses have been recreated here with the original furnishings including the tall desk where he wrote standing up. Entrance is free but we paid €5 for one audio guide for my husband as he was particularly interested but , for me, there was enough information in each room. Unlike most museums we visited information was displayed in French and English.

My wife and I visited the Museum of Magic last week while we were in Paris. It is a very interesting little place and I highly recommend it if you have any love at all for magic shows and magicians. My wife is no fan of museums, but she enjoyed this one as well as the adjoining Museum of Automates, a collection of old mechanical toys which is included in the price of admission. Both are small, but contain a wealth of history of magic and the magicians who made it as well as some nifty toys from the late 1800's and early 1900's. Although mostly in French, the exhibits, like those of Georges Melies, one of the first people to create visual special effects in early cinematography, and whose tale is featured in the movie "Hugo," are in themselves well worth the admission price of 14 Euros (about 16 dollars) apiece. There is a short magic show that is both entertaining and quite well done (also in French) and just watching the faces of the kids in the audience is, in itself, worth checking this place out. Oh, and just as an aside and a bit of a creepy fact....the Marquis de Sade used to live in the apartments above.
