Di passaggio da Arruda ho notato la chiesa del borgo che all’esterno è un tipico monumento manuelino con un bel portale e la struttura interna. Il decoro interno è invece più tardo con decoro in azulejos e un bell’altare. Merita un’occhiata.

It is one of the most beautiful temples of Manueline and Renaissance architecture of Lisbon region. Was built by King Manuel I and it is a national monument since 1910. The porch from the 16th century has several decorative Manueline and Renaissance elements. The interior is a true tile museum, from the 16th to the 18th century, with paintings, statuary and high value architectural pieces.
An old church that remains cool inside whatever the weather and lighted by rays of the sun. It is decorated with ornammental portuguese tiles. Amazing place!

Interesting museum really far from Lisbon. We went there because it was close to our hotel. But we found it really interesting that worth a visit!

The Interpretation Centre of the Lines of Torres Vedras is a museological space dedicated to the theme of the Lines of Torres Vedras. Here, the visitor can discover the military defense system that dictated the withdrawal of the Napoleonic army of Portugal, in what became known as the 3rd French invasion. Visit it in the Historical Centre and consult the conditions for groups, kids, and seniors.
Una visita al centro di interpretazione è un ottimo modo di iniziare una visita alle line difensive usate per la difesa dall’invasione francese in epoca napoleonica. Ospitato in un edificio quattrocentesco è piccolo ma ricco di informazioni. Ben organizzato.

The historic DOC or viticultural area of Bucelas has produced wines of note since the time of Lord Wellington, and in particular, the Arinto grape variety is said to have been born here. The modest but well-done museum in Bucelas gives a thorough overview of the region, the grapes, the local winemaking process, and the people. Great examples of the lagares and wine presses used to create local wines are on display. The only concern for non-Portuguese speakers is that most of the displays are in Portuguese. Fortunately, even if it isn't your language, the €1,50 entry fee is well worth it to see the historic objects, maps, and records.

The first of four wineries we visited, a short drive from Lisbon, the web site did not say much, google maps showed a run down looking industrial wine production unit, nothing like you would find in the Medoc region or anywhere in Bordeaux for that matter. With much misgiving, we made the journey by car.
The previous day I called and spoke to Rodrigo and confirmed that we would be coming, we were late but no issues, we were the only visitors!.
Its located on the main road, when you get to Arruda dos Vinhos, drive through, the road then turns left up hill, at this point go straight on and carry on until you come to three desolate looking buildings on the left.
Rodrigo then talked us through their production process, we are talking many million liters of wine but small when compared to the likes of De Fonseca and Bacalhoa which we also visited.
The cooperative consist of some 200 hundred members who supply the grape, so the success or failures on the part of the vine making process determines the success or failure of each of the 200 vineyards. Interesting large concrete vessels and stainless steel cylinders that had electrically driven 360 degree stirrers, not something you would encounter in Bordeaux. I guess the cooperative with the backing of 200 members, it is possible to invest in this type of technology but no optical quality checking of the grapes, no hand picking either. We were taken to the very large middle building and was surprised to learn that it held many below ground storage tanks holding ten's of thousands of liters of wine.
We tasted the reds and was astonished to learn the price, incredible value and very good vine it was. Sadly we could only buy two bottles which was all we could bring back with us to the UK.
I believe there are three other similar cooperatives in the region, as with this coop, I think they all deserve a visit. There is no charge and even though it was just the two of us, Rodrigo went to a lot of trouble to explain all, I think we were there for an hour and half or more, many thanks. Rodrio did say that they had a booking for 50 visitors on the Sunday, so those in the know do take the trouble to visit and support the coop.
The web site needs updating as do their premises and with a bit more investment in marketing their product, the coop should achieve a well deserved greater prominence in the world of Portuguese wine.
A good few photos to upload but the option to do this is not available

Alqueidão Circuit offers a route through well preserved archaeological, natural landscape and military heritage. It is an outdoor visit circuit, nestled in the Olmeiro Hills, lies 5 km south of the Sobral de Monte Agraço village with foot paths (GR30 / PR1) connecting the Forts of Alqueidão, Machado, Novo and Simplício and the military road. It has directional and bilingual interpretative signage.
