A sizable city in its own right, Arnhem is best known today as the site of one of the most famous battles of World War II. Given city rights in 1233, it has long been at the center of conflicts because of its strategic location on the banks of the Rhine River. The Battle of Arnhem, part of Operation Market Garden, was fought in September 1944. Advancing Allied forces, in large part due to a series of mistakes, failed to secure a key bridge and suffered defeat, delaying the Allied advance into Germany until the following spring. The 1977 movie "A Bridge Too Far" was based on the events here.

The Big or Eusebius Church in Arnhem has dominated the skyline of the city of Arnhem for more than five centuries now and tells the history of the capital of the province of Gelderland from the Middle Ages until the Second World War and the post-war reconstruction. The Eusebius Church is both historical and contemporary and is frequently used for various activities and events. Get fascinated by the history of the Eusebius Church. Discover the historical objects, the famous Strumphler-organ in the beautiful Church Hall and return to the year 1000 in the crypts. The unique panoramic elevator takes you past one of Europe’s largest and heaviest carillons up to 73 meters high, where you can enjoy a panoramic view over Arnhem and its surroundings. The Eusebius Church regularly organizes (temporary) exhibitions on the history of the Eusebius Church.
St. Eusebius church also known as the Eusebiuskerk or the Grote Kerk, at 93 metres is the largest church, and the largest building in Arnhem, The Netherlands. [1] Notably the building contains an elevator that was added to the church in 1994, which allows visitors to travel to the top of the spire and view the city of Arnhem from its highest point. More intriguing perhaps, visitors can also enter the crypt at the rear of the church which contains a number of full skeletons lying in state, in the darkness of the church's crypt.

The bridge over Rhine is a fitting tribute to John Frost whose soldiering abilities were commended by German opponent Bitterich. The bridge is currently being decorated with gaint tv screen for 75th annivarsary of Battle of Arnhem. The bridge gives good view of the Rhine river and is great place for an evening stroll. Contemporary architecture, modern facilities, a selection of shops and large open platforms: Arnhem Station is the definition of what train stations should be in this day and age. Easy to navigate around and not too far of a walk from the Old Town.

Visited the Koepelkerk twice, once for a free concert. The church has been renovated to a very high standard and has become a cultural meeting place. I joined a women's choir and one day later enjoyed a free concert. The sound is good, the location fabulous and the church holds many memories for me. A fantastic visit.
