Transfagarasan Highway

Reviewed By 118val - Shepparton, Australia

Because we travel mid October we were really fortunate that it was still open. The first part was magnificent with the sun shining through the colourful Autumn leaves. The road covered the southern section of the Carpathian mountains for 90 kilometers with steep hairpin bends, long S-curves and steep descents, climbs to 2,042 metres with snow in the upper sections. We stopped at Balea Lake and beautiful waterfall which was very peaceful as few people were travelling. some of the tunnels could be better lit however it really is a breath taking drive.

The citadel is reached by a climb of 1480 stairs (time to climb the stairs: 30 min). The view from the citadel it’s amazing. I suggest to make the effort! Excellent for a small hike. It took me about 15 min to climb - rather running than walking).

Vidraru Dam

It is the biggest lake in Romania. It reminded me of Interlaken in Switzerland. One can have an amazing view over there, can have a toilet stop, and a decent snack or a trip by boat on the lake. It is worth seeing it

The place is beautiful and green. Sadly, because of the Covid pandemic, you can't visit the museum. You can visit the village museum. It is beautiful and has a loooot of houses from different regions. It also has equestrian lessons..but again, because of the pandemic, they are not available.
