We LOVED this spot...it was the highlight of our trip and we are so glad that we did it! Highly recommend the experience! Our family did not do a guided tour so I can't speak to that. We were in our personal vehicle and drove from Huanuco to Huallay. The drive took about 3 hours and most of it was the Carretera Central, the heavily-trafficked 2-lane highway that links Lima to the jungle side of Peru. We went up to 14366 feet but dropped back down to about 13500ish when we got to Huallay. Huallay is a national park with an exorbitant s/2 (about 75 cents) entrance fee,. There is parking next to the entrance. You can also request a guide for the hikes that they offer...one is a 3-hour route and the other is 5 hours. Our group preferred to just take off on our own...the route is marked fairly clearly and honestly there is a lot of just open plain so it's not hard to get your bearings and head back to the entrance. It was about 40 degrees, I think...our jungle crew was not well equipped--we were in layers with a fleece, tennis shoes, and wool hats and gloves purchased in Huanuco--but we were not too cold. The ground is marshy, so be prepared for damp feet. We also took in thermoses with hot water for mate de coca, as well as snacks. The park itself is amazing! Our kids had a fantastic time climbing and exploring and hiking. Thankfully no one got altitude sickness although we were all developing headaches by the time we left about 4 hours later. We are so very glad that we went!

Beautiful views during both days. We were lucky to enjoy the mountains in their full green glory during the summer rainy season without any rain. The hike, especially on its second day with a brutal uphill, is challenging, hence not recommended if you are completely out of shape or have issues with your knees. The accommodation for our overnight stay is pretty and the pool came as a nice surprise after a long hike in the first day. Our guide was Rafael. Very knowledgeable, friendly, professional, punctual and funny. 5 stars for Rafael.

Our tour guide, David, was absolutely brilliant and his knowledge, humour, friendliness and problem-solving skills are what made the tour such a success. He provided us with lots of fascinating commentary, made sure everyone's dietary requirements were met at the restaurants, ensured nobody felt left behind on the short hikes, and he was always happy to answer all our questions. He even sourced clean towels for our visit to the hot springs so that we didn't need to rent any. Worth every single penny we paid for this tour.

I had an awesome time on this ride! The guide was really friendly and even offered us some snacks along the ride. Most of the trip was down a windy dirt road down Chachani volcano, with incredible views of the surrounding mountains and Arequipa below. The guide took us on a couple routes off-road as well. A great way to spend the day if you are an experienced mountain biker or a beginner like me! Thanks for the fun adventure!

Whilst the idea of visiting a volcanic quarry might not be top of many people’s bucket list we found the trip entertaining and informative. Our guides met us at our hotel in a car and took us to Cayma, one of the districts of Arequipa to see how the Sillar Stone was commonly used. A very peaceful, and typical district Square. Then after a quick stop overlooking a panorama featuring all three of Arequipa’s volcanoes we headed to the first quarry. Its a literal, working quarry, although it feels very much like it is trying to pivot to tourism, with some decorative sculptures appearing. We had a demonstration of stone cutting, including the chance to split the huge chucks of rock ourselves. It really showed how hard the work is. Next to another note un-used quarry which features a ravine walk along a dried out river bed. We saw unusual-rock formations and historic rock carvings. Then we were dropped back at our hotel. Overall there was a good mix of things to see and do. Whilst my wife was bored by rock cutting, she loved walking the dried river bed, so i would say a good mix for couples! The guides were knowledgable, fluent in english, charming, and attentive to our questions and observations. A great few hours well spent. Highly recommended!
