The Church of Saint Mauritius is located in the Northeast corner of Appenzell next to the River Sitter. The building originates from around 1069. During its history 4 churches have been built on the site with each church being larger than the original. Most of the Gothic features were destroyed in a fire but the tower still remains along with the quire which is between the nave and the sacred area. The location and interior of this Catholic Church as it stands today is quite magnificent with its lavish ornate interiors, stunning stained glass and vibrant frescoes. It is certainly well worth a visit if you are lucky enough to be in the beautiful town of Appenzell which is situated at the foot of the Alpstein mountains. St Mauritius was attributed to be the patron saint of Army Infantry & Weapon smiths. The location of the church and grounds are as you would expect in Switzerland, beautifully clean and pristine, the grave yard is particularly impressive with its eclectic grave stones and markers.
