Built in 1880 and little changed since, the Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad is the finest and most spectacular example of steam era mountain railroading in North America. Its equipment, structures and vast landscape exist today as if frozen in the first half of the 20th century. USA Today readers voted Cumbres & Toltec the Best Scenic Train Ride in America. Climb aboard this National Historic Landmark for a 64-mile day trip you’ll never forget. Our coal-fired steam engine carries you through steep mountain canyons, high desert, and lush meadows as you zig zag between the Colorado and New Mexico border. Open your eyes to spectacular and rare Western scenery which can only be viewed from this train’s unique route. Ride in the Victorian elegance of our deluxe parlor car or choose the budget-friendly coach car. Either way, a delicious buffet lunch is included. Trains depart daily from Chama, NM and Antonito, CO, from late May’s blooming wildflowers through the golden leaves of October.
There are many options on how to enjoy this ride. We started in Chama and took the bus to Antonito where we boarded the train. We stopped in Osier for lunch which was provided and freshly prepared. We then continued on back to Chama. The...MoreWe are delighted that you enjoyed your trip. We hope that you will ride with us again soon!

This is the oldest church in Colorado and apparently it had a fire in February 2016 you wouldn't know it. The church wasn't open when stopped by. The church is well kept up and the original stained glass windows are visible unfortunately they have plexi-glass over them which limits your view. It's definitely worth the stop even if you only just stretch your legs.

It takes only a few minutes to detour the few blocks to take in this architectural oddity. According to locals, the entire building(s) were constructed using salvaged scraps. Great Photo Opp!

We offer daily excursions into the beautiful backcountry of southern Colorado on snowmobiles or all terrain vehicles.
Living in Florida, I asked the reservation specialist - "Now that it is late March, is there still snow on the ground?" Upon arrival, we realized how silly that question must have sounded. There was 6-10 feet on the ground after several days of 60+ degrees! Cumbres Pass gets LOTS of snow! I am a "tourist sledder," getting a chance to snowmobile once every few years. After a week long business trip in Albuquerque, I wanted to treat my wife and daughter (native Floridians) to their first-ever encounter with accumulated snow and see for myself what lied beyond the view from the highway running North of Chama. I now find myself stretching my vocabulary for appropriate adjectives to describe our experience. As other reviews have indicated, tour guide Troy is one of the best purveyors of customer service I have ever encountered. How a single gentleman can possess so many positive qualities is amazing in itself! For those considering a snowmobile adventure, Troy offers experts and novices exactly what they need - an absolute guarantee that they will have a safe, comfortable and exciting experience. No one is pushed beyond their comfort zone as he progressively exposes your group to more and more breathtaking scenery. We booked the day-long tour with high-performance machines, knowing our inexperience may end the day early. It did, and Troy handled our ebbing strength perfectly, leading us back to the office just as we were about to cry uncle.
I would recommend the high-performance package to anyone considering this experience as it is not just a "speed thing" for adrenalin junkies. The shorter, more powerful and nimble machines allowed our group to stay together and to avoid challenges that the heavier machines would have created. (The speed wasn't bad, either!)
Finally, this activity provided my group with an alternative New Mexico/Colorado. We did not see another human being the entire day. We saw terrain that we would NEVER have encountered on our own. We became experienced in a sport that few or our warm-weather friends have even considered. And, we became single-day friends with an amazing man whose depth of character emerges throughout the day. It was more than a vacation highlight, it was a "life experience" that will never be forgotten.

Colorado Highway 17 goes over Cumbres Pass and across the New Mexico border. It offers great autumn colors and little traffic.
GOD'S COUNTRY. Warning :: Heart Patients---Check with your Doctor before traveling this high above sea level!! Autum Colors are a must see---words don't even come close to it's beauty.
