Erwin was an absolutely fantastic tour guide! He is extremely knowledgeable and definitely has a passion for his city! He even recommended and joined us for an extremely delicious, traditional Guatemalan meal. We not only had a blast on our tour, but also gained a life long friend. I highly recommend taking a tour with Erwin.

These families are members a local coffee farming co-op and you will learn first hand how they work among the coffee co-op on a daily basis. We will take a private tour with one of the co-op farmers to their field and then go to their house to see how they toast the coffee on a small batch at a time level. Finally we will have lunch with the family before riding back to Antigua.

We did the highly recommended double dip of Pacaya sunset tour and then an overnight Acatenango hike. We went in May which is the start of the wet season, so we knew weather could be an issue. Other than a short downpour during the Pacaya sunset tour, (we ended up renting horses for the hike), the weather cooperated with us. (Despite the unfavorable weather forecast!) Both trips were about a 1.5 hour drive from Antigua, so you had an opportunity to view the country side. Mario was a superb guide for both excursions. Both Pacaya and Fuego were active, and both must be seen at either dusk or the darkness of the night to appreciate the lava flows and explosions. We recommend using porters for the Acatenango hike unless you are comfortable carrying a 40-50 pound pack. The hike itself is fairly strenuous, but it is quite do-able. You want to be in good shape. Other tips for the Acatenango hike are: (1) While OTO uses good gear, I would bring your own sleeping pad if you desire an upgrade over a foam pad. (2) bring a camping pillow (3) Bring a compact foldable chair (4) bring a tripod for camera to capture the night photos (5) Bring a deck of cards as you may have a couple hours of downtime between camp arrival and sunset (6) wear good hiking shoes or hiking boots and cold weather gear (hat, gloves) for the summit. (7) If it does rain, make sure you have dry bag and decent rain gear. (8) Get a power nap in the afternoon so you can stay up in the evening to enjoy the volcano fireworks (9) Bring extra gear that you can donate to the porters after the trip and tip generously. (10) make sure you request Mario as your guide! (11) and brush up on your Spanish to fully appreciate your visit to Guatemala.
