We are a group of people that love this island although not all of us were born here. We live, study, walk, swim and research constantly realizing how valuable this island’s nature and culture is. This is how an idea is born to combine research and actions-creative and entertaining- recognizing that tourism may benefit a place if developed in a proper scale and managed accordingly… Andros paths

To arrange a visit on a different day and time, please contact the museum. Don't be put off by the name 'museum', this is not a sterile exhibition of dusty artefacts but a carefully restored Cycladic olive mill. The attention to detail in the restoration is incredible and this alongside a video presentation and a personal talk by the owner make this a really special and informative experience. It is the best preserved animal powered old olive mill in Andros island. The mill was restored and transformed into museum, in order to offer to every visitor, regardless of age, the option to come close to the underling culture of the valuable product and to get familiar with the old traditional techniques of olive oil production as well. Besides they can see the traditional technics of constructing buildings in Cyclades through the centuries.

The Monastery of Saint Irene was founded in 1780. Abandoned in 1834. Renovated in 2007. Nowadays It holds summer camps for children mostly orphans. We went on an island tour with Explore Andros (Christos) and one of the highlights was the beautiful renovated Agia Irini Monastery. Beautiful little church, wonderful exhibitions on Writing, Geology, Flora with clear explanation of the guide at the monastery (sorry I forgot the name). Besides this the view from the monastery to the surroundings was absolutely breathtaking.

In July 1979 the Basil and Elise Goulandris Foundation inaugurated the Museum of Contemporary Art in Hora, capital of Andros and birthplace of Basil P. Goulandris. In the two wings of the Museum a part of the Foundation’s collection is exhibited throughout most of the year. Each summer, since 1986, the Foundation has been organising temporary exhibitions of distinguished 20th-century artists in the Museum of Contemporary Art on Andros. The Basil and Elise Goulandris Foundation has built up a significant art collection of important 20th-century Greek and international artists. This collection comprises the core of the Museum of Contemporary Art on Andros. The increasing attendance of the Athenian public and the inhabitants of Andros led to the Museum’s expansion to a new wing, which was completed in 1986. Moreover, the Foundation has made provisions for the construction, equipment and enrichment of a new Museum of Contemporary Art in Athens.
What a beautiful museum! I LOVED this place! I loved the architecture of the building, I loved the collection of art so carefully chosen; and I loved how it had been curated. Great audioguides (free with entrance ticket), and the best coffee and cake we had during our stay in Athens - don't miss the café! The only criticism would be that the items in the souvenir shop were ridiculously expensive, €70 for the Museum catalogue as an example.
