What to do and see in Amalfi Coast, Campania: The Best Ferries

December 24, 2021 Alida England

Stretching along the southern side of Italy's Sorrentine Peninsula, the Amalfi coast dazzles with its mysterious grottos, craggy cliffs and shimmering bays. Grab a seat on the sea side of a regional bus to soak up views on the fabled route from artsy Positano to Amalfi. Ravello offers some respite from the crowds, plus the stunning Villa Cimbrone, which overlooks the Bay of Salerno. The historic section of Sorrento has winding streets filled with craftspeople. Capri is only a hydrofoil or ferry ride away.

Must SRLs Eventi & Turismo

We experienced the Amalfi Coast for the first time as tourists, then as residents, and more recently as tourism operators. Visiting far and wide, we fell in love with this land, and grew to appreciate its continuing capacity to surprise us with unexpected beauty spots, not all of which are well known. Our idea, and, above all, our desire, is to share our experiences with you.

This is a great way to go from Salerno to Amalfi, Salerno to Positano, Amalfi or Positano to Sorrento in a short time and having the beautiful views of the Amalfi Coast, very cheap, clean, organized, and great staff. They have bathrooms, coffee, drinks, snacks and souvenirs. Very reliable and the loading time is very fast. I love it all.

We took this ferry from Amalfi to Capri and back. It also stops in Positano on the way. We bought tickets at the booth at the pier. If you purchase a round trip, you get a slight discount. The ferry arrived about 15-20 minutes earlier and left on time both times. It was clean and neat inside. They also have a bar if you want coffee, water and stuff like that. We didn’t experience any crowds as we visited in July during the pandemic. I really enjoyed the trips with beautiful views and made many spectacular photos and videos. We were sitting inside on the way to Capri and outside on the upper deck when we were coming back to Amalfi. Equally wonderful but I wish I had a hat in the open air (got a little bit burned even though it was late afternoon already). My favorite moments were arrivals to the piers- the towns of Amalfi, Capri and especially Positano from the ferry were just wow!

Late October 2019 - way past the usual timetable allowance for this time of year - but the weather and seas were beautiful. I booked this ferry online for E58.49 return and then exchanged my email for a ticket at the ticket window 20-30minutes before departure. You need ID, passport is suggested - I didn't need it. I got a map with my ticket. When the ferry arrived I got a seat at the top - prime seating - first come basis. There are seats inside too and I used them on the way back as it was already cooling down and blowy ready for the sunset and bad weather to come the next day. This ferry delivers what it is meant to do, get you from Point A to Point B with 2 stops on the way - Sorrento and Positano. We left at approx 8.55am and left Capri at 5.15pm. The staff were professional and helpful. It was a smooth trip both ways. You could buy small souvenirs and drinks / nibbles on the ferry and they also came around with a small selection to buy. You may think it is a long day, but you can easily fill it up with these things: funicular / chairlift rides, shopping at Anacapri, E19 small boat trip around the outside of the island 2hrs, lunch somewhere- vast selection, choose wisely as some of it is subpar and visiting Anacapri's famous house Villa San Michele. You can get around the internal parts of Capri many ways: Walk - takes ages, bus for a few euros - be sure to stand in the queue the right way or they tell you to go to the end and drive off without you or taxi [some convertible]- very pricey for a short trip. There are many piers on Capri, but there are ample electronic signs telling you when the next ferries arrive / depart and which pier to go to and there are ticket offices too along the water. No. issues here. Was as expected.
