A 5 minute drive up the asphalt road to the summit over looking the entire town, basin, Clutha river and surrounding mountains - so easy to get to - can be walked or biked - or driven for all ages and physical abilities - in a bigger town there would be a gondola for access and restuarant at the top- take a picnic, kfc or coffee or just your camera - just make sure you don't leave town without going up there, oh and it's FREE :)

Elegant - Sensuous - Intimate. Award Winning Pinot Noir wines from Jacobson-Chiaroni family boutique vineyard. The wines produced from this vineyard have received many awards, showcasing the premium quality of Judge Rock wines. A romance not a blockbuster, feminine not masculine, balance not power, family not corporate, and love not lust. Come enjoy a tasting :)
Met Angela, one of the owners, who was lovely. Free tastings of 7 wines, all yummy but didn't make a purchase today. The 'Cellar Door' is part of her property and it's certainly a very 'homely' experience. Angela is extremely knowledgeable and friendly, worth a stop. Ziggy the cat made my day!

Pioneers, risk takers, brave, fighters. These are words that have been used to describe the founders of Black Ridge, one of the southernmost vineyards in the world and the oldest in the Central Otago region, planted in 1981. A decision to grow varieties found in the same latitude and climate in the northern hemisphere was wise. Pinot Noir, Gewurztraminer, Riesling, Breidecker, Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon were chosen. Now with almost 40 years of vine age and experience you can taste and buy wines with a real sense of place and expressiveness here at our cellar door with amazing views over the Alexandra basin. Cellar door open from 11am till 5pm. 7 days from November - April and Mon-Fri from May - October.
Our Experience; A must do for wine lovers! It is one of the earliest vineyards planted in Central Otago and has a unique setting / location. Also - Challenge yourself to try something different from all the rest!! ie Old vine, 5 yr bottled aged Gerwurz, Briedecker, Cabernet rosé and current release PInot Noir comes already with 4yr bottle age! When we arrived we were warmly greeted by Ngarita, who gave us all the history of the site. With her vast passion for wine, her knowledge and her qualifications, we were able to discuss and learn more about wines, not only in the area, but the world. (Picked up some tips for our planned trip to Italy.) This cellar door is definitely worth the effort to visit! Cheers! PS The wines are great value and reasonably priced!

A handsome walking suspension bridge (although early in its life it was for horse-drawn vehicles) with an interesting view into the amazingly bluey-greeny water of the Clutha and up to the mountain clock. Check out the explanatory board before marching across; particularly the amazing details on how high the floods of earlier years have reached. If you wander a few metres down the road you'll see the cute little book house shown in my photograph!
