Aberdeen's well-preserved historic district is teaming with interesting sites.
To the east of Union Street in Aberdeen is Castlegate, it is a small area but there is a lot to see in a relatively small space. The Salvation Army Citadel stands on the former site of the medieval Aberdeen Castle. Castlegate was named after the site of the castle gates until their demise in 1308. The Mercat Cross is in the centre of Castlegate and has a hexagonal base and was built in 1686 by architect John Montgomery. The Gallowgate is just off the main square and is named after the site where the gallows were situated and is where public hangings used to take place. Off the main square is the Castlegate Well which is no longer in use. On top of the disused well is a small bronze statue that was added by goldsmith William Lindsay. It is a fascinating area of the city and is a must see whilst in Aberdeen.
This charming stone structure dates back to the early 17th century.
