Cat and Owl Steak and Seafood

For years and years this special little restaurant didn't advertize or market themselves--because the word of mouth was all it needed to keep the tables full. There is now a decent size sign to help you find the place that my husband and I go to when we want to enjoy a good steak (freshly cut in the kitchen) and served to perfection . . . every single time. The Cat and Owl is a real throw back kind of restaurant. Decor from the 60's with lots of cats and owls as decor. Don't let any of that color your perception about the place--this is a first class, first rate steak house (good seafood too) and the best, very best salad bar anywhere. Seasonal vegetables (grown out back) are featured (when was the last time you could order collard greens at a steak house?) and the ruby red tomatoes on the salad bar only have to travel from the garden to the table. The best wait staff ever. If you have been before it is just like Cheers --they remember you. Just off 64 it is a easy stop on the way from WVA east. A great local spot if you haven't been and you live nearby. If you are vacationing nearby and want a really nice meal, do yourself a favor and make a reservation. You will not be disappointed. Oh and they have a full bar too. This is a family restaurant. It is not unusual depending on the time of year to see young couples in prom clothes, sitting next to a family with kids, parents and grandparents. Comfortable and first rate--all rolled into one lovely little restaurant. The only drawback is that is only open for dinner and closed Sunday and Monday.

So on our ten hour drive to visit family, my husband and I decided to stop here for lunch and bathroom break. Very rude staff! Went toward the restroom first and a member of the "team" was standing at bathroom waiting to clean it and she told me someone was in the restroom and she was waiting to clean it. While we stood there, other people got in the line waiting too. The lady gets mad, pushes her cleaning bucket back and starts mumbling about how the restroom could stay dirty, that she had tried to clean it three times. She is yelling this across the restaurant at another employee. Very rude and in fact my husband and I just walkedOut and went somewhere else. We never stayed to see how "good" the food might have been. We will never go back!

Attractive, very clean deli "sandwich place" in a former storefront on Main Street that gives interesting charm. Sincerely friendly staff. Variety of sandwiches-- chicken salad was good but a bit salty. Most sandwiches around $8. Kid's plate available at reasonable price ($3.50 with drink). Wonderful for a casual meal or an informal meeting. Nearby street parking. Close to Alleghany Highlands Arts and Crafts Center.

I will start out with saying the food was wonderful. But what happened left a bad bad taste in my mouth.I have waited two months to comment thinking the sting would lessen, it hasn’t!I called at least a month in advance for reservations for a large group. They asked that I call back the day before to confirm, which I did. I actually talked to two different people on at least three calls. The reservation was for 5:00pm. Most of the party (7) was there by 5 but because it was a surprise, we (4 more) arrived at 5:20pm. It took us longer to get there than we anticipated, my bad.The folks already there had their drinks and the waitress got our drink order after about 10 minutes and 10 more minutes to get those drinks. The owner came over and mentioned how late we were, okay.Another 10 minutes to get appetizers ordered, 10-15 minutes to receive those, okay.Another 10-15 minutes to order entree, okay, another round of drinks. At least another 30 minutes to receive entrees, everything still okay. We were enjoying the visiting. The problem came when the owner set my much awaited dinner in front of me. She leaned over and said “we expect to turn the table at 7:00 (maybe she said 7:30 but I was so mad I couldn’t hear, my ears were ringing and my face burning). The guest to my left in my party heard the comment, too. Neither of us had ever heard such a thing. (Not turning a table - but telling the customer.)So everyone seemed to enjoy their food and I do know mine was good but I could barely swallow. I had just been scolded at the dinner table like a ten year old and was having trouble swallowing from the anger. If you plan to turn a table, you need to convey that message ahead of time. If you plan to turn the table, you need to get orders and serve in a more expedited manner.I’m sorry to the folks having to wait at the bar for their 7:30 table which probably wasn’t ready until 8:00.We spent $800-$900.Sorry you had a bad experience first of all. Your reservation was for 5 p.m. All of your party did not arrive until 6 p.m. The next reservation was at 7:30 p.m. which was two and a half hours after your scheduled reservation.. There is several other inconsistencies in this review which I will not address. When we book reservations we allow two hours but in your case had allowed two and a half hours. We are a small restaurant so thus we plan on turning the tables especially on weekends. We cook our food to order. We are not a fast food restaurant so depending on what is ordered (appetizer, salad and entree) and how it is cooked will determine when the food is served. We encourage all diners to be prompt because of the diners that have a reservation after them.

There are only a few restaurant choices in Clifton Forge, so we stopped here when on a trip for a quick lunch, based on TripAdvisor reviews. It is an older restaurant with a big old fashioned wooden bar. The restaurant can definitely use an update. I had the shrimp Caesar wrap and my husband had a hamburger. My wrap really was just small shrimp and a little lettuce. It was hard to taste any dressing or cheese. The burger was average bar fare too.
