Danny's Pizza and Subs

Reviewed By Jim W

I happened upon this quaint, little store front pizza place when I discovered the Italian restaurant where my group and I intended to dine had recently gone out of business. Stuck in the parking lot, I saw the glimmering lights of Danny's Pizza beckoning us in. Te four in my group were completely satisfied with the quality of food, the price of the meals, and the service of the staff. I also noted, right away, that the local law enforcement community frequent this place. From my perspective, any place that caters to our LE community is great by me. I had the Greek pizza, which was excellent. I can see (taste) why they were voted "Best Pizza in Fredericksburg." I also learned a bit of trivia about this place that says it is a locally family-owned and family-operated restaurant that has been open since 1997. "We are the grandchildren of a Titanic survivor and we have lived in Fredericksburg for over 30 years. Now, that is pretty cool!

We usually order a large pizza half Ledo Deluxe, have Pepperoni which has never disappointed over the years. Lately we decided to order some of their other entrees. We ordered Chicken Parmesan, Mandilli Ravioli, Ravioli Du Boef and a Steak and Cheese sub. We all enjoyed our entrees, though the Chicken Parmesan was not the best we have had. My wife loved her Mandilli and my Ravioli Du Be of was good. The entrees were a good change of pace from the pizza we usually order. Prices are lower than others in the area but that maybe because portion sizes are smaller not as generous as other Italian Restaurants. We will stick with their pizza next time.

So after checking in, we asked the guy at the reservation desk of our hotel for a "dinner" recommendation. He suggested that we call in an order somewhere for delivery because "most" of the nearby restaurants closed at 9pm. Yikes! It was already 9:40pm and we had just gotten in from the airport. He went through a folder and handed us some menus, and encouraged us to "go online or call and see if they will still deliver tonight." He said he knew all of the delivery people for these restaurants and he recommended each of them as "good options."One of us has a problem with MSG so just to be safe, Chinese was out. The sandwich place stopped delivery at 9pm. The big mega-chain pizza place turned us off. So Vocelli got our call and our order at 9:49pm. I told the girl on the other end of the call that we were in a hotel and asked if we could still order for delivery. She cheerily responded "Of course!" I placed the order: A large veggie pizza (added bacon), an order of hot wings, and something called Vocelli Rolls and was told it would be about 45 minutes. Approximately 35 minutes later- there was a knock at our hotel room door, and the driver was handing me our dinner. We were amazed at how fast it arrived, and tipped our driver well. The food: Everything was hot, fresh and very good. The pizza crust was not pre-made or frozen like the chains use, it was chewy, but the bottom was still crisp. The sauce wasn't sweet (I was thankful for that- I can't stand the sugary sweet "pizza" sauce that so many places have here in the midwest.. Yuck.) There were plenty of veggies on the pizza, the bacon crumbled on it was plentiful and crispy, and there was plenty of cheese. It wasn't under or over cooked- there was just enough charring on the veggies and the cheese- yum.The wings were hot and didn't lack sauce. The "buffalo" or "hot" wings sauce was hot and tangy, but not so hot that you couldn't eat them without having to take a break, or burning your face off, and making you want to submerge the lower half of your face and tongue in your ice water. (Yes, been there- done that.) These wings came with ranch and blue cheese to dip in- and they were really very good, especially considering they were delivered to a hotel room. We agreed that we had paid much more for wings that were not nearly as good.Lastly, we tried something called Vocelli Rolls, which are similar to a small sweet roll or cinnamon roll- as they are made with a yeast dough- and rolled up with a filling, sliced into wheels and then baked. We got the spinach and something- and dipped it in a tomato based sauce. Those were also very good, and yes, we ate them in layers like everybody eats cinnamon rolls...So- for around $40 with the tip, we quickly got a hot, fresh, very tasty meal. Since our hotel room came equipped with a fridge and a microwave, we ate most of the leftovers the following day for dinner before our flight home. We actually rinsed/dried the container the wings came in and put the remaining Vocelli Rolls in it- and stuck them in our carry-on bag. The wife teased, but would be thankful later that we had them because delays at the airport for our return flight brought us home several hours later than expected- and after all the nearby restaurants had closed. We ate the Vocelli Rolls on the plane, and they held us until we got home. We look forward to our next trip to Fredricksburg and while we would like to try some of the local restaurants, we absolutely would order dinner from Vocelli's again, especially if it's after 9pm!Hope this is helpful!

Sam's Pizza

Reviewed By Mfclingan

We debated about where to order pizza while we were staying at a hotel in Fredericksburg. Sam's was advertised as being around for 27 years so we chose that. Wrong decision! The fried calamari was worthless...to make it edible the breaking had to be picked off....and while the pizza was a great deal....buy one get one free, it was edible...but not at all worth it. Let's just put it this way....we got the two pizzas with grand plans to eat leftovers for breakfast and cart the rest home in the cooler. We ate a little bit of the pizza for dinner and left almost two full pizzas in the hotel room to be thrown away. It wasn't worth our time!

La Delizia

I come from a family of what only can termed 'pizza snobs'. We are difficult to please. But this is the BEST Thin Crust pizza in the area! All fresh ingredients, made to order, absolutely delicious. The crust is so perfect when it comes out, each slice has that crisp golden bite, no droopy crust here! The garlic knots are a garlicky lovers nirvana with a toasty golden outside & soft fresh hot inside...drenched in roasted chopped garlic...heaven. My ONLY criticism would be the sauce is fresh yet lacking that special something...yet still enjoyable as an ensemble slice you will remember long after you've left. Highly recommend.

We ordered take out since this place is convenient. We ordered Scallops & Shrimp All a Castigilia, Chicken Parmigiana and Chicken Carbonara. I really enjoyed the Chicken Carbonara and my wife enjoyed the Scallops & Shrimp. The Chicken Parmigiana was ok also. The portion size were generous. The only issue we had with the order was with the salad dressing was not what we requested. We would order from them again.

So very impressed with everything that this owner and staff was doing for this charity. It melted my heart and I was glad to brI got my children here for this. I was in on Sunday and we heard a server mentioned it to her table and also that it was posted all over Facebook. Well I was able to see the servers post which she said for her birthday all she wanted was for ppl to come and support this function so I had to come back out. The servers birthday was on Sunday and we watched her work never missing a beat. The best part was when this lady came in with 4 kids and they was all carrying something for ms penny’s birthday. She made sure to hug and think each one and the smile on her face was as priceless as the one on the children’s face. This is a place u fell u can bring ur family to and not worry how young the children are. Servers like her are hard to find. To to ms penny happy belated birthday and so glad we came out.
