It took us a while to try this incredible ice cream/gelato shop. Everything is homemade...seasonal...and with the most delicious homemade waffle cones or cups that you won't soon forget. Perhaps 5 stars for the cones alone...and which you will see them make right before your eyes, more often than not.
Pistachio was perhaps the most amazing flavor. Peppermint is apparently famous throughout the Valley...and the spiced chocolate is rich, decadent and could compare to flourless cake. They actually have a hazelnut flavor (as well as others from time to time) I was told that is good for diabetics...now there's a trick that you won't often see in any restaurant: a specially crafted dessert created for those who cannot or should not indulge!
If you are up for a treat...you will not be disappointed. This place ranks with some of the top shops in the world...and frankly, as I said to my friend, this gelato reminds me of the kind we had in Paris. Not to be missed!

Our meal was terrific and memorable, but what really made this dinner a standout was the service. Meg was friendly and professional, informative and easygoing, and we enjoyed our visit so much because of her. The farm-to-table approach was very appealing to both of our palates-my husband is a vegetarian, I am not-and we loved every bite.

Dairy Queen is Dairy Queen. You know the menu. This is close enough that I go every month or two. The people who work here are young for the most part, but I am always amazed at the great service I get. They are friendly, accurate, and seem to enjoy their job. Obviously, the manager is doing a great job hiring the right people!

We have eaten here a number of times over the past few years. The restaurant is almost always full, both inside and out. Diners of all ages. The menu has a good variety of options. The burgers are big and juicy, good steaks, and a nice selection of appetizers. Our last trip was to get a couple of growlers (64 oz bottles) filled but wanted to try a few beers as well. We had a late breakfast so we weren't too hungry, so we thought the cheese and cracker appetizer would be light enough. Wrong, it was huge with a great variety of cheese, bread, crackers, meats, and some jams. Our waiter asked what beer taste were we thinking of and he brought us a taster of 3-4 dark/stout beers. He didn't lead us astray. We ate all we could, got a doggie bag, and brought full growlers back to the condo at Wintergreen.
This is good for families, young or older adults, you don't have to have a meal. Go, try some of the beer with a pretzel. If you come from DC, or other cities where growler fills are $25 and up, Nelson county will be a pleasant surprise on the cost. Sit inside or out. Just enjoy.

I grew up in Verona and remember when Ciro's opened. It is owned and operated by a super nice family who has always produced consistently delicious Italian food. Our favorites are their sausage pizza, Steak and cheese sub and Steak Parmesan Sub. They also have a very nice side salad.

Wright’s Dairy-Rite Restaurant
Restaurant Style: Fifties American
Last Visit: 12/01/17
Ambiance: Looks like a drive-in from my childhood. Phone in your order from your car or from your booth inside. If you’r looking for fancy, this ain’t it, nor is it an imitation modern diner. They do, however, deliver what they advertise. They claim to be voted one of the ten original drive-ins in the US and they fill that line in my notebook.
Service: Prompt and friendly. They really do cook everything there so don’t expect fast food. They were solicitous of all our needs including the first grader with us.
For Kids: families should be happy here. The kid’s menu includes customary options such as hot dogs, hamburgers, chicken tenders, grilled cheese and corndogs, however, they come with choice of fries apple sauce or fresh fruit, plus drink and ice cream dessert, all delivered to your table in a classic cardboard car for the ride home. If that is not enough, there’s more soft serve ice cream, a banana split, and other cakes and funnel fries.
Hours: Monday through Thursday 10 AM to 9 PM, Friday and Saturday 10 AM to 10 PM, Sunday 11 AM to 9 PM.
Expense Account: Moderate. Figure about $8 - $10 per person. Pay your server at meal’s end.
Food: The basics reign supreme here and they play on the heartstrings of my nostalgia. You can get a 2-ounce hamburger, a third-of-a-pounder, or the mighty Monster Burger at half-a-pound. In winter, the chili is hot and flavorful, or try brown beans with corn bread. Sandwiches such as a reuben, BLT, or chicken salad come on a crisp grilled bread like mama used to make. Then, too, surrender to the foot-long or half pound hotdogs goopy with mustard, onions, chili and cheese. Fries are crispy not slimy. Even the subs like the special beef with grilled meat, provolone, bacon, sour crepe and brown mustard manage more flavor than the average joint.
For Non-Carnivores: Drive-in’s catered to meat eaters and this one is consistent. You could get the egg salad sandwich or a meatless salad, but I wouldn’t think I was doing my vegetarian son any favors by bringing him here.
Difference Dividend: Get a Wright’s Wheelie made from warm glazed donut, ice cream, whipped cream and topping. Or, if you’re still hungry, sample the sausage cheeseburger.
Adult Beverages: None. This is a dairy bar.

Aioli is a wonderful restaurant in downtown Staunton that is notable for both its creativity and simply terrific food.
We’ve visited Aioli several times when visiting Staunton to see performances at the Blackfriars Theater. It’s essentially a Mediterranean restaurant serving both tapas and full entrees. This restaurant has a little more of a Moroccan influence than you might see at, say, a Spanish tapas place, and that introduces a number of offerings and flavors that are well worth trying.
The exterior is unremarkable, but don't let that concern you. The location is also convenient, being just off of the primary street (I believe it's Beverly St.) through the center of Staunton. The restaurant itself is on N. Augusta street, more or less across from the movie theater.
Inside, Aioli is nicely decorated with bright oil paintings around the room and a bold color scheme with lots of red and black. It conveys a feel that is both comfortable and sophisticated. Although a relatively intimate space, the tables are not crowded together and it was easy to communicate within our group.
At our most recent visit we had the charcuterie platter, quail, bruschetta (three types), and a kind of Moroccan sheep sausage that tasted wonderful. Our service was quick.
They have many European and American wine offerings and we had no trouble finding a glass to complement our meals. The price was very reasonable given the quality of the food we received.
We would highly recommend Aioli if you are visiting the Blackfriars or if you are just looking for excellently prepared food with a distinct Mediterranean feel.

Verona, VA is sort of the go between in the Harrisonburg/Staunton area. It's right off Interstate 81 and travelers of all kinds come swarming through and drive around this little town. Not much in this area..although there is the Factory Antique Mall (Biggest antique mall in America) - and there's also a popular diner locals hot spot called Armstrongs that serves up home cooked meals with the popular spaghetti dinner on Wednesday nights. Aside all that there is just distribution centers, and offices.
Little to my knowledge did I know there was another little "treasure" situated in the small town. It's called "Nisa's Cafe."
This place apparently has been around a couple years, and apparently I had no clue it even existed. I heard about it recently from some former teachers and friends.....they raved about it...and visit this place all the time for coffee and lunch.
Finding it is the fun part. It is located at 11 Green Hills Dr. Suite 4...with the mailing address of Staunton, VA.
It is in the same building as High Tech Nail Salon and is adjacent to the cafe.
Walking in...space space and more space! I appreciate that because most smaller cafes are so small in size it's hard to find a table to eat...forcing you to either wait or take your food to go. That was a pleasant surprise.
One of the first things you will also notice is the huge menu that is custom chalked onto the wall starting from the ceiling and ending at the floor. It's beautifully done & the menu is very clear and easy to read and understand.
The way it works is you order your food at the counter, and they bring it out to you. I ordered the Italian Special which was such a great choice. It was loaded with salami, ham, melted provolone cheese, lettuce, tomato, banana peppers, mayo, homemade italian dressing on toasted ciabatta.....holy **** - one of the best little sandwiches I've had in a long time.
With any sandwich, you get one side....a whole list of them to choose from. I chose the homemade hummus with veggies...YES that's right it's homemade and addicting. They even have tubs of it to go if your addiction is off the hook like mine.
In addition to the sandwiches they have a wide variety of salads, wraps, soups during the cooler weather... HOMEMADE chicken salad, HOMEMADE pimento cheese, homemade lots of stuff you surely need to check out. Notice how I say homemade a lot? Makes me super happy.
They also make their own cupcakes, brownies, cookies, you name it...they have it.
After all that hummus and those sweet sweets nothing pairs more perfectly than a cup of house roasted coffee, right? They have that. They also have a wide variety of teas, smoothies, and expresso drinks. Give your wallet a break at Starbucks and come support a local eatery with drinks truly made & appreciated for YOU!
The service was excellent. Food was out in less than 10 minutes.... no problems getting in and out.
You can also rent out the cafe for special events such as showers, reunions, luncheons, etc....
Do yourself a favor and come get some of that gold from this hidden treasure in Verona, VA. You won't be disappointed!!!!!!!!!!!

We were in town to see a play & picked this place due to Trip Advisor reviews -- and we're glad we did! Casual but comfortable atmosphere, friendly service (shout out to Rachel), and great food! We thoroughly enjoyed our meals (my wife said her salmon was grilled perfectly) and there were other wonderful aspects too -- delicious homemade bread (three types), homemade whipped butter (blackberry butter on the night we visited), & an after-dinner surprise too! We thoroughly enjoyed our visit, & we will go back (we want to try the ribs).

I refuse to eat at fast food restaurants or most chain restaurants while traveling and today I happened across Armstrong's restaurant in Verona, VA. Only two minutes off exit 223 on I-81. Good country cooking with daily lunch specials and nice selection of made fresh pies. Service was top notch. If you are in the area, stop in. And they serve breakfast all day on Sunday's.
