Reviews on Mexican food in Papantla, Veracruz, Mexico. Papantla (Spanish (help·info)) is a city and municipality located in the north of the state of Veracruz, Mexico, in the Sierra Papanteca range and on the Gulf of Mexico. The city was founded in the 13th century by the Totonacs and has dominated the Totonacapan region of the state since then. This is the home of vanilla, which is native to this region, the Danza de los Voladores and the El Tajín archeological site, which was named a World Heritage Site. Papantla still has strong communities of Totonacs who maintain the culture and language. The city contains a number of large scale murals and sculptures done by native artist Teodoro Cano García, which honor the Totonac culture. The name Papantla is from Nahuatl and most often interpreted to mean "place of the papanes" (a species of crow). This meaning is reflected in the municipality’s coat of arms.
Things to do in Papantla
Four of us dined there recently. Three of us chose red snapper (huachinango), and the third shrimp. The meals came with enchiladas (choice of red, or green pumpkin seed or mole verde). The fish were large and fresh, and all of us thought that the fish were the tastiest fish we had ever tasted. The shrimp were good, but there could have been more of them. The disappointment were the enchiladas. They were of poor taste, and distracted from the otherwise fantastic meals. We also had dessert, and these too were delicious.
20°26'47.52"N 97°19'17.35"WThis is a small restaurant not at all in the class of cafe Pardo. But nice.I had breakfast and dinner there. Dinner was 2 tacos of cochinita pibil. Good. Sauce was spicy.Breakfast was eggs with bacon, orange juice and coffee. Total price was 58.00 + 20.00 + 25.00 for a total of 103.00 mex pesos. The same breakfast at Plaza Pardo was 72.00 wit tortilla or bread included.
We're a place with the authentic totonaca food located on the downtown of Papantla. Come and try the taste of Papantla.
La comida estaba muy buena. Las estrujadas, la cecina. Se que los tamales son buenos pero los pedimos al mediodia y parece que no eran recien hechos sino de la tarde anterior. el precio fue bastante rasonanle.

20°26'45.66"N 97°19'15.80"WThis restaurant is number 4 in Papantla (if you donât count Naku twice) on Trip Advisor.I chose to go there instead of going to Agora restaurant because it was in my hotel, Tajin.Reception is ok, you can sit where you want. The restaurant is nice, the tables are not too close to one another which ensures privacy. The menu is comprehensive. From sandwich to hamburger, to pasta to shrimps.I started with a cream of mushrooms. It was delicious.I then ordered shrimps in a butter sauce. It took a while but it came. Without sauce. I told this to my waiter. He said he would see. He never came back. No sauce, no excuses, nothing. Desert was a cheese cake that was only so so.The bill wasnât. I was immensely disappointed.I donât recommend this restaurant.
Enjoy our cuisine with Mexican tradition with an Argentine touch. Our menu is able to satisfy even the most demanding palates. Also delight in the gastronomy of the Totonacapan region.
