We were keen to try this pub after it reopened in the summer and it was a pleasant meal, not outstanding just good pub food and friendly service. Didnât see the specials board until we were leaving and wondered why there was a lack of fish on the main menu - would have tried the Mussels or fish of the day and probably had a better experience Iâm sure. Will go back with friends and try the specials next time
Hard to imagine anything, or anywhere more customer-unfriendlyHaving walked to Freshwater from Yarmouth, we were certain we would be able to find a good lunch, maybe some wine. And there it was, the Albion, enviably sited, with outstanding views out to sea, and an unassailable command of the market.Walking in, the impression was like entering a museum holding artefacts that nobody was interested in. Nobody around, not in reception, not anywhere. Well, we thought, maybe it is all out facing the sea â a sun terrace with tables arranged to please the diners. Nope, nothing. So I found a door that opened, walked down some gloomy corridors, passed a dining room with tables neatly laid, and a closed bar. Finally found a tiny bar manned by indifferent staff (they must have been out of their teens, surely?) who were unable to serve anything other than bottled beer. On enquiring about food, we were told that there was none. âA sandwich?â Not even that.So we walked.Naturally the six of us tried to fathom out how such a place could be so able to miss a market opportunity â for I should say this was a Bank Holiday!! The only thing we could conclude was that the hotel was shortly to be demolished in favour of a luxury apartment block, and that nobody cared. I cannot imagine a proper business being so indifferent to the possibilty that there might be customers around, actually wanting to spend money, for we were not alone in our irritation. Like something out of the seventies, or earlier. Appalling.

We have a holiday home in Yarmouth so are there often, however in 15 years of being there Iâve only been in Saltyâs 3 times...this time, once to have one drink with some friends & another to hand in someoneâs ID card that I found on the floor outside. The only reason weâve never been in is because there are usually a mass of stripy topped noisy people outside and itâs seemed a bit intimadating. We therefore normally sit and drink at the pub opposite and take humour in everyoneâs matching outfits instead, however we decided to look past it and try the food for a change...we even wear the same outfits now! Well we werenât disappointed. Ok there are things weâd change but for the taste of the food, all could be forgiven. So we booked ages in advance for a 6:30pm slot. Upon arrival we were a little surprised to see there were two long tables so weâd be sitting with others we donât know. They werenât there yet as they werenât booked in until 8pm but we commented on how it would be impossible to fit the other 6 booked people in the tiny space next to us. So we ordered drinks; the other 3 had red wine, but I ordered a âlarge glass of house white wineâ. I must say the âlargeâ glass was somewhat small. The glass was average, and the wine in it however was just less than half full. I didnât want to complain on a first visit, so I just ordered a second glass, which was topped up at the table with slightly less than I had in the first. I took a photo of course as it was below my expectation of a large glass. I wondered if they just said yes but actually only do one size? The house wines all round however tasted great. A good choice. We ordered starters and mains at the same time. Starters were lovely. Really nice. Apart from initially being given the wrong starters which was resolved with super speed, the only feedback we gave them was regarding the moules/mussels. I personally had 5 empty and 4 unopen which for a starter wouldnât normally leave you with many, although they were excellently sized so not the end of the world. The two that had them had similar issues so the guy with the husky voice apologised and said heâd speak with the kitchen. Calamari was apparently really good. For main, I had the steak; purely because Iâd already have fish multiple times during the week so I was a bit fed up of it, and Saltyâs seem to have a mainly fish based menu - oops on our part - and I didnât want pork belly cuz itâs really cheap to buy urself so it seemed a big mark up for me personally. Steak was £32.50 though so not cheap but Iâve had steak all over the place so price for steak doesnât surprise me, however it was totally worth it. The best fillet Iâve ever had!!!! Came with watercress, mushroom, onion rings and loads of chips (chips come in a large bowl to share). I donât like watercress normally, but it went so well with this dish. I would 100% eat the steak again!! The others had ribs and more calamari and equally loved theirs! Portions were great. Definately fill you up. All would eat here again for mains. We then asked for the dessert menu but was told as it was 7:50pm we had to leave so couldnât have dessert as the next table was due in at 8pm. We swiftly pointed out that we hadnât been told this when booking and the lady said sheâd sort something out. She came back and said sheâd sorted it and we could stay all night so not to worry. A few minutes later she said actually there had been a change so we could stay but would possibly have to move to stools at the end of the table. The thought of stools to eat desserts on put us off dessert so when she came back we said weâd just have a coffee/gin and go. Turned out the people didnât turn up for their 8pm slot so we sat at the table in the end anyway, so we could have had desserts in comfort after all; I say comfort, it was fine for me having lots of people bumping Into the back of me whilst they waited for the bar as I go out more often that the others, but the others on my table didnât like it too much. We had two more drinks in the end as there was a great act on called Andrew Day. Really funny guy. Sings but was a great entertainer. Apparently weâre all going to be on YouTube. His humour is what made us stay longer. I successfully bought drinks but then fell slightly forwards on my way back to the table, spilling my drink in the direction of my father in law ââï¸ The bar man quickly got me blue paper towels, and whilst another customer offered to buy me another drink, the barman made me a replacement free of charge which was such a kind gesture! He even showed me the measure of gin to show he was making a real replacement. Lol. Was impressed as not all bars do that! Some do but not all! Karma got me back just after though, as the lady got pushed by someone at the bar (accidentally of course) and spilt beer down my back. Again, very apologetic and she got a tea towel and dried me off. I saw a human more fun side to her as the night went on, and she was clearly as frustrated with the people gathering in the alley as my table were, as she asked them to move. I actually didnât want to leave in the end as I was enjoying the drinks (oh plastic glasses after a certain time btw) and was enjoying the entertainment, but the crowds and noise got too much for my group so we regretfully left. I had a chat with the security man (who also was the guy serving our coffee) afterwards and he told me the history of the act singing. Heâs been there years apparently! Most friendly and helpful bloke. We actually had an absolutely great night and weâve clearly been missing out all of these years! Although I think a table upstairs will be better for us next time if going with the same people. No longer will we be intimidated by the entrance of people. Theyâre all rather friendly and the food tastes brilliant! Thanks for a great night.

Had lunch here and was not disappointed. Had two starters, fish chowder and moule. The chowder was delicious and full of fish. The mussels were plump and juicy in a lovely broth. My friend had the fish and chips, again very good. Ambience lovely as were the staff. Will be my go to place when on the IOW.

Why not come and enjoy the spectacular surroundings of The Waterfront. With some of the best sunsets in England, our beachside pub/restaurant really is the place to relax, forget your worries and soak up the great atmosphere.
Fantastic food and really good value. Big portions and really high quality. The waiters were lovely and every member of staff approached my dog with a treat and cuddles. Lovely views on to the waterfront and its free parking if you spend over £30. You can have a lovely stroll down the promenade afterwards and if the tides put, the beach is lovely.
