We were two couples and stayed overnight (see separate review). The place is quite beautiful and we were lucky with the weather so the afternoon started with a cup of tea outside. The hostess greeted us warmly and made us welcome and before long it was gin and tonics for all in the comfortable lounge, which had plenty of discrete seating areas. Our dietary requirements had been carefully noted and our hostess discussed the menu and our choices - we had the £70 (with optional 10% added). The canapes that arrived with the drinks were stunning and generous. One of us had two starters (extra salad made for her), one veal chop, one lamb chop and I had Wild Bass, starting with Parfait of Foie Gras. The menu had nice variation and the quantities were generous. If I had to criticise I thought the variety of vegetable and their presentation could have been better but the cooking was first class.Excellent wine list helped and petit fours (more like grand fours! See photo) with coffee in the lounge finished a super evening.I've seen some of the other reviewers' criticisms and honestly don't recognise them

OK, I was a bit nervous about a Portugese-Welsh restaurant, but I didn't need to be: the meal was delicious, and the combination worked perfectly. The freshest, most flavoursome Welsh meat and vegetables (I had beetroot, my +1 had lamb) perfectly cooked with deep Portuguese skill - the spices brought out the flavours, they didn't overpower them; the herbs infused the dishes, they weren't a last-minute garnish. We had the selection of desserts and all were perfect: sweet and creamy, yes, but not cloying or too rich. House red was perfect accompaniment, and excellent value. Service was impeccable, and great to hear Jane and Rui's story. They love their food, and we loved their food too. Great decor and beautiful quirky crockery too.

We were so lucky to find this amazing restaurant during a three night stay in Ruthin. The atmosphere is warm and comfortable and the service is slick and super friendly. We were extremely well looked after by Andrew throughout our visit. The food was outstanding. Immaculate presentation and delicious. We had been exploring England and Wales for almost three weeks and both agreed that this was the best meal we had eaten throughout our trip.We would highly recommend this fabulous restaurant and would definitely return if we were in the area again.

The wood panelled Wine Bar's character is largely unchanged from the original 9 table experience back in the 70âs. It now boasts 20 tables but still works on the foundations of great food using the best local ingredients and wine expertly picked to offer
Beautiful food and fantastic, friendly service. We're not from the area so just went by the reviews, they certainly weren't wrong, so glad we went! We were celebrating our anniversary so wanted something a bit special and Gales didn't disappoint. Everything was so nice, such a great place! We especially enjoyed the sharing starters where you can pick various meats and cheeses. Our meals; the special of the day lamb and ox cheek linguine were gorgeous! If we're back in the area again we'll be sure to visit.
