Visited here on a Friday night and left quite disappointed, especially given the high rating on here. Where to start...Well the place was busy, very busy, which is a good thing, however the acoustics of the restaurant leave a lot to be desired. It's all hard furnishings and hard floors so noise just bounces round the room. It's a racket! You struggle to hear yourself talk and find yourself having to shout across the table to each other. As I say above I like a busy place but the noise here was deafening. It was more akin to a busy canteen. Also I'm not sure what sort of restaurant welcomes a party with a young baby in on a Friday night, screaming away but there you go. As I say in the title, this may be what you're after, but I imagine many of you reading this don't want to hear that on a Friday night in a supposedly good quality restaurant. Still, the crying baby's noise was drowned out by the general noise anyway so it made little difference! The staff were all very young boys. They did their best but it wasn't great. When we were seated, nobody brought us menus, nobody took a drinks order. In fact nobody came at all, for ages, so we had to accost the poor young pot washer who thankfully came to our rescue. Likewise when you first walk in the place is a shambles, you've no idea where to go, given it's part hotel, part pub, part restaurant. The main front of house guy wasn't exactly welcoming.Anyway, the food was okay, nothing special but it was certainly better than the environment. Quite a curious place really and one I shan't be hurrying back to. All in all if you've an ounce of class, or like places that have, I'd be looking elsewhere.

Passion. It is quite often impossible to summarise the experience created within a restaurant with just one word. Passion. Passion to produce the best food possible with the freshest and finest ingredients we can scour the world to find. Passion to strive
Taster menu or a la carte available, all with Scottish twist. Big portions and nicely cooked. Range of drinks was interesting, with taster menu, including whisky of course. Cheerful, helpful staff. Lovely environment downstairs. Would go again.

Celebrating our Wedding Anniversary and invited guests from all over the country most had never been to Durham. Had pre-planned the excellent choice of food & drinks and had reserved tables in the conservatory. We were welcomed by the friendly staff who were very attentive all day. A great DJ played our tunes and itwas just was a fab day of laughter dancing and a wonderful atmosphere. Everyone complimented the food which was delicious and we were delighted the day had gone so well. Some of our guests went back for coffee the next day to enjoy both Ebony and the wonderful sights of Durham
