Situated in the Yorkshire Dales National Park, The Wensleydale Heifer may be within easy reach of the A1 and M6 but it still feels totally rural. A traditional white-washed inn complete with leaded lights and swinging sign, The Wensleydale Heifer gives th
We were staying in Stow House about 6 minutes away and the proprietor there kindly recommended and booked us a table at The Wensleydale Heifer on our first night - it did not disappoint. We were seated in the bar area, which we had to ourselves for most of the night. Dogs are welcome and there were groups of people enjoying the ambient atmosphere in adjoining rooms. There is a wonderful balance of a relaxed and welcoming vibe with Michelin star quality. The serving staff are exceptionally polite and attentive. The highlight for us was the main meal...we highly recommend the slow roast beef, which we both ordered from the daily specials menu, we cleared our plates and savored every mouthful; it went perfectly with my glass of Malbec. The menu is extensive and you will find fish, steak and lobster feature heavily. There is a car park but it is a tight squeeze down the entrance/exit (between the hotel and another building) and I fear very wide or large vehicles would struggle to manoeuvre around it. There is also parking on the road. We would certainly visit again! Enjoy!Thank you so much for taking the time to post your lovely review.I am so pleased that you had a great time and enjoyed all aspects of your stay with us.I am delighted that you enjoyed some of our new seasonal dishes and I have passed your feedback onto the chefs. We all look forward to welcoming you back in the future.

Traditional Dales pub with rooms. A friendly welcoming atmosphere serving good food. Always a great selection of cask conditioned ales. Dogs welcome.
Stayed at the Black Swan Hotel last night with my husband and another couple. When we arrived we filled in a registration card given to us by the barmaid. She was lovely. The card asked for name, address, phone number and email. We were surprised to be told we had to be back by midnight or we would be locked out. We were also surprised that we would have to pay cash for our visit as they donât accept card payments! We were also informed that if we went out of the hotel we had to give our key in at the bar, but that wasnât much of an issue, and as there are no nightclubs in Leyburn, we didnât imagine weâd be breaking the midnight curfew! The stairs up to the room were slightly awkward, with a heavy fire door without a proper handle to pull half way up, which was hard to open. Our room was ok, quite dated, but overlooked the market square so was quite nice. The bed was reasonably comfortable and the pillows soft. I was a little worried that it was going to be cold because the heating wasnât on, but it seemed to kick in later in the evening. Anyway, this morning, our friends were about 2 minutes ahead of us going down for breakfast. I should point out that I booked the rooms through hotels.com, and I made a note under âany special preferencesâ, that two of us were vegetarians, and would like a vegetarian breakfast if possible. We also told the lady behind the bar when we checked in that we were vegetarians, and she said that was fine, breakfast was served between 7 and 8.30, but she wanted to know exactly when we would be down, so we said 8am. When we arrived downstairs, the tables were set up with a glass of orange juice already poured out. There were no breakfast cereals or anything to choose from, but our friends already had tea and coffee served to them, and literally as I sat down, the owner arrived carrying 3 plates of full English breakfast, placed one each in front of my friends, and proceeded to put the third one in front of me. He hadnât said âgood morningâ or even asked what I would like for breakfast, and immediately I said âoh, iâm a vegetarianâ to which he replied rather sharply, âno one told me, it wasnât on your registration card!â, I explained that I had informed them when I had made my initial booking, and that we had also told the barmaid when we checked in, and he walked off with the plate saying âno one told me, no one told the chef!â He then arrived back waving the white registration cards at us, (which had nowhere for us to write down special preferences) and said âit wasnât written on here!â. He did then offer to cook a vegetarian sausage for us, but with his moody temperament I just felt like he would fry everything in one big pan with the meat anyway, and I couldnât think about eating it. I was offered no alternative, but he had brought 3 slices of toast to the table so I ate 1 and a half slices with butter. (No jam or marmalade anywhere in sight). My husband was given a plate with a few mushrooms, a small piece of fried bread an egg and a tomato, and the owner brought the same for me even though I had said I didnât want it, so he tipped my egg and mushrooms onto my husbandâs plate and took my plate away. He never came back to offer us tea and coffee, and we decided that the fact he wasnât aware we were vegetarians made him so cheesed off that he just couldnât be bothered with us! Our friends were quite bemused by the whole situation, I assumed they had ordered their breakfast before we arrived at the table, but it seems you arenât asked what you would or wouldnât like, you just get what you are given, like it or lump it! When we had finished and collected our bags, we came back down to pay, and I had fortunately printed out my booking details so I could prove to him I wasnât lying, he briefly looked at them and said âah well we donât deal with that company much, everything on there is 8 years out of date, including the prices, we only get bad customers from them anyway!!â.Enough said. We wonât be returning.
