2nd visit to Scholars restaurant. And yet again it didn't disappoint. Every course was superb. I had the most amazing soup stater. Followed by Lancashire cheese pie, vegetables and sauce. Chocolate mousse and ice cream. My wife had Thai fish cakes starter. Beef Wellington with vegetables for main. Lemen posset for desert. All were first class food. And you can also have a nice glass of wine. The staff were very pleasant and attentive. 5 stars for us. Thank you for taking the time to leave us a review, you support and feedback is appreciated. We hope to see you at Scholars again soon.

We visited for sunday lunch, taking guests that hadn't been before, following a disappointing previous visit. We have been several times over many years and always enjoyed our visits, and have always recommended it.We were seated downstairs as requested and were brought menus and ordered drinks.I ordered Tio Pepe(or Fino)but was brought Amontillado. When this was pointed out the waiter rather condescendingly told me it was the same as Fino. I pointed out it was not, he then said it was all they had, despite Manzanilla being on the wine list.Starters were ordered and swiftly came. My seafood gratin was tasty, but not very hot, and the scallops were almost raw. The cheese topping was congealed rather than melted. The main courses followed quickly. The beef was tasty, I had one slice and my partner had 2, which seemed odd. We ordered desserts which were acceptable but not outstanding. I really don't think serving in a tall glass, no plate, looks very attractive, and difficult to eat with only a teaspoon. Surely sundae spoons would not be difficult to provide? This is where the service faltered. Its as though they all disappear on a break. Half an hour after finishing the desserts, we were still waiting to order coffee and could not attract attention. We did eventually, and it then took 15 mins to arrive. The young staff try hard, but need more training, and also need to smile!!I feel that Sunday Lunch is an overrated and over priced experience at the Freemasons. We will return but maybe we will stick to dinner next time.

I contacted Artisan two weeks prior to our visit to ask for their allergen information, it took me until an hour and half before our reservation was due when they finally sent it and even then initially they sent the wrong allergen sheet. This does not instil confidence especially as on checking the allergen information it said three vegan dishes on the menu contained either egg or dairy. The halloumi and vegetable burger which I presumed had vegan halloumi on was in fact not vegan, the red pepper houmous and pitta bread contained egg and the jack fruit spring rolls milk. I queried this on sitting down at the table and the waitress went to check with chef and returned to confirm the burger was not vegan and some garbled message about the other two dishes. I did not feel confident I was in safe hands so ordered simple dishes of a main course beetroot salad as my starter, at £12.50 it was a rip off, it was minute with hardly any beetroot mostly salad leaves and a roast vegetable pasta dish was insipid served as large strips of pasta like pappardelle not spaghetti as on the menu which in hindsight I wish I had checked as it could have contained egg, so not vegan. My friends seafood linguine contained over cooked fish in a bland sauce and not brilliant at all and my husband thought his vegan dhal stuffed pepper main course way over priced at £15.50. There was no way we were going to return so decided not to complain. Allergies are serious and my experience dining out highlights so many places cannot be trusted and Artisan is one of them I'm afraid. I also noticed there was no mention of the menu being altered as regards the burger, which is also a worry for vegans and allergy sufferers who follow in my footsteps. The only saving grace was the service was good from front of house. I would definitely not return though, its a all fur coat and no knickers kind of place.
