After soaking in the beautiful gardens we were all looking forward to a scone and cream. The scones were far too over baked ,very hard and cream in a tiny jar !!! how awful, there was no taste to the cream. A very disappointing tea. I sincerely hope cream in a jar doesn't catch on, it strips a cream tea of all beauty and British tradition.Thank you for your feedback!!I was surprised to read that you found your scones hard and over baked as we generally receive rave reviews for our scones which are always freshly baked and usually light and crumbly. The clotted cream in a jar is a bit of an experiment for us this year. When we took over the business in 2017, cream teas were served with whipped double cream in a little dish but customers wanted proper clotted cream. We buy our milk, cream and ice cream from a local dairy but they don't do clotted cream. So were started buying clotted cream from our wholesaler but it is supplied in individual portions in plastic containers and as we sometimes over 50 cream teas a day there was a huge amount of plastic rubbish produced. We took it out of the plastic and served it in little dishes so the customers did not see the environment cost behind their traditional British Cream Tea!!In this day and age, responsible businesses are trying to reduce single use plastic wastage, so this year we decided to use clotted cream in jars The glass is easily recycled by our local recycling company and many customers like to take the jars home with them. The feedback we have had has generally been positive, customers think the jars look sweet sitting with a matching jar of jam!!I am not wholly convinced by cream in a jar myself, but in an age when food hygiene is so much at the forefront of a business such as ours and diary products have to meet strict guideline, the days of a British tradition that we both remember may be limited!!I would be very interested to hear from anyone who knows where we can buy local clotted cream that isn't sold in individual plastic portions and will have the shelf life to satisfy the current food hygiene requirements can be bought?? Your clearly did not enjoy your tea but as you refer to our Gardens as "beautiful" perhaps you would consider leaving us a TripAdvisor review on our 'Merriments' listing for the Garden as we find that our many happy visitors just go home happy but those with a complaint go straight to TripAdvisor!!! Having said that a big 'thank you' to all our visitors who take the time to review us!!!

Nothing is very well signposted or clear to work out what is available. Had it not been we saw others eating meals we would have thought we could only have coffee and cakeWe ordered chicken pie. Ploughmans and quiche. After 20 mintutes we were told the pie wasn't cooking properly so we were offered a free drink. Only 1 yet there was 3 of us!After 35/40 mins the meals cameThe ploughmans was ok. But thats not hard. The quiche didn't taste like described. The chicken pie was literally a small pie with chips and some gravy. It tasted fine. What a disappointment. Cost nearly £40 so walked away with a bitter taste. Esp as we saw the same pies for sale in the freezer in the shop.Even the toilets do not have an obvious signDear Rosie, I am sorry service was not to its usual standard today. We were busier than usual and this did catch us offguard. I am sure our offer of a free drink was not intended as a single drink for one person. I am sorry if there was confusion in this regard. Thank you for your comments regarding signage. We will install a menu at the entrance to the cafe in this regard. Menus are also on clip boards at the counter where you order. We have also put some more signage in relation to toilets. In relation to pies, we make these pies (Bodiam pies) ourselves and sell them in both the cafe and frozen and cooked off form in the shop. You can also buy our quiche and ham and cheese and bread for the ploughmans. It would be strange if we did not sell these products which we also serve in the cafe. We have to charge more for food in the cafe than the shop given the staff costs, other overheads and VAT charged in relation to serving and preparing the food. Our prices are comparable with other venues. I am not sure you can have a sitdown main course lunch with drinks for much less than £40 for three people anywhere these days. Once again, I am sorry you were not entirely happy with your meal and for our signage omissions. I do hope you will visit us again.Best wishesEd Middleton(Owner)

So firstly a declaration of interest - we’ve known the owners for years, and I always dock one star in such circumstances. But to business! Having known the exceptionally high quality of the Smokery’s produce for many years, we had high expectations of the food given that its based on their smoked products. We were not disappointed. The menu is very much as might be anticipated - various types of smoked food served in open sandwiches, or with crushed potatoes / salad, as platters and so on. Actually the prawn cocktail and avocado caught my eye - may have to return for that!We settled for the open haloumi sandwich, and the smoked salmon hash. Both were very good and delivered all we hoped for. We’d recommend either!Albeit without any wine / beer, the bill worked out ago about £22 so not an expensive outing.Service was friendly and effective. All I can finish with is to say that I’m rather glad The Kiln is over an hour from us - i would probably spend more time there than sensible if not!!We are so pleased you enjoyed your lunch at the Kiln Room and thank you very much for your comments. It's a shame you don't live a little closer!

It was hot today at Tibbles!!! It got very busy at lunchtime todayAnd the New Barista coped well....however a friend had a very burnt looking cheese scone!! She said it was a bit hard but a good taste. Personally I would not have sent that out, but as she ate it I suppose she liked the Crunchy exterior!! Otherwise the service was very friendly and courteous ...We are so pleased this venue has reopened, but let's get the scones right??!!

We live in the village and treat ourselves to breakfast at the Bistro on a frequent basis. It's always freshly cooked- the special Brunch on a Saturday is great and the coffee excellent. Then, there's Friday night pizza and special chef's nights on some Saturdays. What really marks this place out though is Paul and Julie who always make you welcome and remember exactly how each regular takes their tea or coffee.

My wife and I go to The Bell in Ticehurst once or twice a year and usually get lunch on the way. This year we were going to go to The Greedy Goat (in Ticehurst), but it was closed for the day. We had noticed a sign for The Courtyard Cafe, and decided to pop in there instead. Whilst they had a large selection of meals available, we each opted for a breakfast. For what it was, a typical English breakfast, it was delicious. Decent size portions, tasty food, tea as we asked for, friendly service, and the whole place looked very clean. Not sure if it is fairly new; we certainly haven't seen it before, but well worth a visit. Also, the prices were very reasonable.

I was in the area for work and, having read the great reviews, wanted try one of the deli platters, but only sharing plates for two were available. I asked if I could have a scaled down version of the meat one (salamis etc) and was told no, because they were already plated up. So much for "everything is prepared from fresh after you order" as I kept hearing the waiting staff say...A couple of observations, having worked in catering myself. Firstly, I understand that margins are better on a sharing plate for 2 and have no objections to paying a bit more (proportionately) to have the same thing for one. Secondly, I understand that some dishes for sharing really cannot be scaled down - but surely that is not the case with cold meats & bread? Thirdly, I know that - at busy times - solo dinners are a mixed blessing for a restaurant, as they take up the same space as two for half the income. All that being said, there are a lot of us solo diners out there, looking for a change from boring sandwiches when travelling for work, so we are a large market. The restaurant was 2/3 empty during my visit. The message I got from today was that you were not interested in my custom or in making a small effort to accommodate me, or other solo diners. That's your decision, of course, but I'm not sure it makes a lot of sense from a business point of view. For the sake of 2 minutes to take a few slices of salami off a platter, you could have had a regular customer, instead of one who won't be back.Thank you for your feedback which we always welcome although we are very sorry to hear you were not entirely satisfied. There must have been a slight misunderstanding as our food is certainly not plated up but the portions of food are weighed and portioned up in advance, then sealed to keep them fresh and handy to use when needed. The portions for our sharing platters are for 2 people and if we split them we are left with single portions which we have found in the past can result in waste. Our extensive menu includes wraps, jacket potatoes, open sandwiches, soups and salads as well as just 2 sharing platters. All these dishes contain a selection of our smoked foods. We have many solo customers as well as larger groups - all customers are extremely welcome!
