This historic coaching inn dates back to the 1700s and has been a traveller's retreat and local favourite ever since. The Saracen's Head was newly refurbished in May 2012 and is now thriving as the heart of Great Dunmow. With cozy spots near the open fire
We go here fairly regulary. Why? For several reasons. (1) It is a lovely venue, both the bar and the restaurant are inviting and well furbished. (2) The staff are brilliant! Very efficient and welcoming but friendly and chatty at the same time. (3) They currently have a very good chef. The menu is not huge and varies from time to time and if you are lucky the choice is sometimes more 'interesting' than others. I say if you are lucky because what we have seen as the more interesting items can be replaced by more run of the mill choices. That said everything that comes out of the kitchen is superb and nicely presented. The fish and the chips are the best we have ever tasted.Lunchtimes, which is when we prefer to eat out, are surprisingly quiet (except Thursdays which is Rotarians lunch) for the quality of the venue and the food and drink, not forgetting the quite reasonable prices for it all. This to my mind should be one of the most popular and humming places in Dunmow to eat or drink or both - and of course it probably is in the evenings when we have yet to visit. There are several themed evenings advertised in the bar.

I feel quite sad that we have been so many times to eat here and was looking forward to the âgin and jazz evening â Iâm not sure if they were short of staff or just disorganised but I honestly felt it was not worth the money this visit. If you advertise a âgin eveningâ you have to step up to what you offer and the gins certainly did not match what it said on the menu. No additions to the gin not even lemon - I had to ask. We had to wait 40 minutes for starters, ask for cutlery for main and dessert and for a drink that wasnât brought to the table out of 4 drinks ordered. Also repeatedly asked for table water. We then had an additional wait of 30 minutes for mains and when we decided to have ice cream for dessert the âscoopsâ were tiny for the money. The music was ok not really jazz and we came away really disappointed as we have had such positive meals here before.

The Butchers Arms is a 500 Year old country pub set in the lovely countryside of Gt Dunmow. Only 15 mins from Chelmsford and 10 mins to Stansted Airport. Perfect for Lunch 12-3pm or Dinner 6-9pm and Sunday Roast is served 12-7pm every week. We are a prime
Why is it when we find a great pub it's a few miles away from home? I would love a local like this as we would spend a lot of time there. The landlord and landlady are very welcoming and friendly. After our meal we had coffee in the bar and they and the locals chatted to us. This place is half an hour away from us but we will make the effort to go when we can. Apparently the Sunday roast is very good so that will be our next visit. Our first visit was the Saturday before mothers day for lunch. We really enjoyed the food which was well cooked and plentiful. One course was enough really but the puddings are to nice to miss. I had the steak and kidney pud with lemon sorbet to finish and hubby had the steak with fruit crumble to finish. All were excellent and very filling. Di, the waitress, deserves a mention as she was helpful, enthusiastic and enhanced the pubs atmosphere

This restaurant is very nice indeed. Food was excellent and wine list extensive and very competitively priced. Dining room was very nicely laid out and comfortable. Both of us ate the Chicken gnocchi with wild garlic and asparagus which was presented beautifully and the chicken was cooked to perfection. Portion size was very good. Desserts we chose were excellent - Sticky toffee pudding and Apple Cake - both service with excellent ice cream. Waitresses were very pleasant and helpful. Never felt rushed. Although this was in my opinion fine dining it was very good value.Hi carolbB5171JAThanks for taking the time to write & post a review of your recent experience with us - your comments are very much appreciated and welcomed by the whole team. We do hope you wont leave it too long to dine with us again. Many ThanksThe Star Inn Team

A la carte dining in the heart of market town Great Dunmow, Essex. Private hire, outside catering, cocktails and more
Just enjoyed a wonderful birthday lunch for my partner in this fab restaurant, Square 1. Fantastic service from three girls who were watching, unobtrusively, all around the restaurant to make sure nothing was amiss for the diners. Nicely laid tables, albeit minimalistic, but it worked against the dark wood background. We ordered three different roasts and they arrived together, Plates laden with succulent meats and al dente veggies, accompanied by a wonderful Yorkshire. Roast potatoes followed in ample quantity. Little pots of various sauces were put on the table. All of it delicious which was proven by the empty plates that were returned. Sweets followed of the chosen strawberry Eton Mess and waffles. All delicious. My choice was cheese board with, I will say, a home made relish to die for.The whole meal was fantastic. Service was second to none. A lovely family atmosphere as the restaurant gradually filled with families and small, well behaved, children. Nice to see.

We are a cozy country pub. We serve good home cooked food. We have a cosy, warm bar with real ale and an open fire, a lovely dining room and a large beer garden. We also have B&B rooms available.
Beautiful old pub, full of charm and character. Laid back service, which can make for a relaxed and unhurried visit. Staff are friendly. Food was delicious. Pan fried salmon was perfectly done, goats cheese salad was refreshing and light, and the sausage and mash were full of flavour. I can imagine this pub to be unbelievably cozy in the winter. Definitely a regular now! Great to hear weâre now a âregularâ. Look forward to seeing you again. Thanks for your comments.
