The Great House

The Great House pub and restaurant, between the Kent villages of Cranbrook and Hawkshurst, is set in some of the most celebrated countryside in all of Europe. Within its own superbly kept grounds, this 16th century inn more than lives up to its location w

Saw the pictures, and read the reviews, but the reality fell far short. The bar area was grubby with food smears on the floor so not an enticing entry. The burger was ok but my chicken kebab with vegetables turned out to be four or five large chunks of meat with unappetising charred slices of capsicum and onion in between. It looked as if no chef had any input into this meal. The accompanying flatbread was dry and stale. This is pub grub.Good morning Katie,I am sorry to hear about your visit. Please could you email me to discuss further. Regards, Sian

We booked their best room for an overnight stay. We enjoyed a very good dinner and their staff are all superb and made the evening a success. Then the problems began. Their best room is located above the kitchen normally not a problem except this night the kitchen staff neglected to turn off their extraction fans.....imagine listening to a loud humming mechanical noise all night....we did not sleep. The manager handled my complaint quite well but suggested I was mistaken as the head chef said he had turned the fans off....obviously there is a wheel off somewhere. I suggest eating and drinking at the Milk House but beware if you are contemplating staying and if you do avoid the Byre room.

We just popped in for Coffee and I must say what a lovely pub. Staff friendly and decor was great. The menu looked really nice and they do B&B as well. We don’t live that far from them so we will go back to try the food. The village is idilic if you want a taste of the Kent countryside this is it.

We went into this Hotel for a quick sandwich/drink before a hospital appointment. The sandwiches that arrived were not what we had ordered so taken away (with an apology) and we waited another 10 minutes. At last arrived and husband's fine but the special pickle supposed to be in the cheese sandwich was practically non existent. What was going on in that kitchen!! There should also be some staff training as the noise generated by staff behind the bar, whispering, laughing and loud shouting across the room to other members of staff, with no concern for the customers trying to have a relaxing lunch, was something I had never seen before in a hotel.

We had been recommended this cafe and first impressions were good: a combination cafe / antiques shop. However, there was some confusion when we tried to order a gluten free filling for a jacket potatoe. We were told the mayonnaise in the tuna mayonnaise filling was not gluten free (fair enough) when my wife ordered a chicken and bacon filling the chicken came in the same mayonnaise so had to be returned (not mentioned on the menu except with reference to sandwiches). Fair enough some chicken without mayonnaise was made available. Unfortunately the jacket potato was microwaved and was over cooked. I had the standard breakfast which was spoilt by the fact that both the bacon and the sausage were over cooked. The sausage was rock hard. I did mention this to the waitress ( and I very rarely complain) and we were given our hot drinks free of charge to compensate for the mess-ups, thanks for that. Sorry guys but a disappointing visit.

A charming restaurant with excellent cuisine and friendly service from the owner herself. The wine list was varied and both bottles we tried (the Portuguese red and the Italian Nero) went perfectly with the carpaccio and lamb cutlets respectively. We didn’t try everywhere in Cranbrook but nothing we did came close to The Cloudberry.

Four of us visited for Saturday 5 Oct night for the full tasting menu, and two of us had the £40 wine add on, which is supposed to pair with the food.Service was extremely attentive and knowledgeable. The food, as other reviews will allude to, is very precise, often home sourced and very small so getting a big enough mouthful to asses the taste was a challenge for me; I would say its easy to go home hungry unless you have a tiny appetite. The staff took trouble to explain what we were eating and I suspect many of the ingredients were relatively cheap to acquire; granted they use some of their own produce but, as a farmer, I do take um-bridge with the constant story of 'it only being good if you grow it yourself ' ! and if I hear another person telling me it is 'grass fed' lamb ! nearly all lamb is grass fed, its just too expensive to feed anything else. Don't be hoodwinked by the emotional marketing. I did not recognize many of the wines, the measures were small but the wines pleasant; not exceptional though so for £40 I expected more. The atmosphere is 'cosy', but really quite pub like; wooden tables and floors with little in the way of acoustic compensation, so for the two of us with hearing problems it was an evening of, "sorry, would you mind repeating that", and shouting at each other. Try though I did, I missed most of the explanations about the dish we were about to eat. This is a very expensive evening, even by London standards so surely a table cloth might be included. And for the price it would so be nice if they left us to decide what tip to leave instead of adding a service charge. When a gin and tonic costs £17 and a large glass of red the same, does one really want another large percentage added on, to walk it ten steps across the room. With a bill of £370 presented when two were on tap water, and at least one person is still hungry , you do wince a bit at nearly a £40 service charge. But the place was full and most of the reviews are excellent so I suspect it is my lack of sophistication that is the problem. My palate is simply not practiced enough, and my cynicism such that I have long since ceased to be over impressed because the prices are high. Give it a go if you like 100 a head restaurants, and see what group you fall into. You wont see me there though.

Called in for a drink on a sunny afternoon. We sat outside (so that we could have our dog with us) and, although there were a few bees around, they were not that much of a problem. The service was quick and efficient and, although we were only having a drink, the serving staff were solicitous to an extrteme asking us if we were satisfied with our order. The cakes on display looked delicious and the food being served also looked very tasty and well-presented. Will be back to sample the food.
