A fantastic 300 year old Inn, full of character. A selection of Cask conditioned Ales, premium lagers and wide selection of wines. We serve only freshly prepared food, our menu is changed seasonally, classic pub dishes are served all year round. Good old
Visited Sunday 13/10 at around 4pm. Having tried to get a table at both the Thomas Kemble and The Hawk without success, I was surprised that The Barge had plenty of free seats particularly as, from past experience, it is always busy, as it turns out I now know why.The staff were polite and friendly and we didn't have to wait too long before our order was taken, our starters arrived in an acceptable time and were, to be kind, average so I won't go into detail. For my main I opted for the 3 meats roast dinner and here is were my real problem lies! I should point out that in most eateries when ordering a roast dinner I always ask the waiting staff if the meat is freshly carved but, as I had dined at The Barge on a few occasions in the past, in this instance I didn't think it was necessary, BIG MISTAKE, HUGE! The plate was the ususal Sunday offering, large, slightly over done Yorkshire taking up half the available space, mixed green veg and carrots, few bits of crackling that didn't crackle, the smallest pig in blanket I've ever seen and the obligatory potatoes, all edible but nothing special. The meat however was terrible, I really don't know how it was possible to cut it so thin, clearly brought in pre-sliced and pre-cooked, there was no way to establish the difference between the lamb, pork or beef, 1 piece of each, all of which were virtually tasteless. Any cook , as I am not prepared to suggest that they have a chef working there, should be utterly ashamed of turning out food of this standard. And the punchline............... over £16.00 for a roast dinner containing meat that Iceland would reject from their shelves. I did forget to mention the stuffing ball, best thing on the plate.I did hear that this establishment had changed hands but I am truly shocked at how the standard of food on offer has deteriorated. I would normally check reviews before dinning out but this was a last minute thing and, as I mentioned previously, the food at The Barge has always been of a high standard. To summarise, polite staff prevent me from giving only one star but I will not be going back until the reviews improve considerably. If you are looking for a roast dinner in a hurry don't bother going to The Barge, pop to Tescos and get a microwave one and save yourself £13, it will probably include a better portion of meat too.

I'm surprised to read so many fantastic reviews so perhaps we were unlucky but we were a table of 4 eating early dinner whilst restaurant was fairly quite. Seated promptly by FOH. I think the service issues are caused by not having 1 member of staff look after a table. In total we were served by 6 different members of staff, from ordering drinks to food to service. We asked for starters and mains to be delivered together as not everyone had starters, it took just over an hr for the starters to arrive and mains came out 20 minutes after - I wouldn't expect this especially how quiet it was early Sunday evening. 1 waitress literally slammed food down and ran off before we could say anything. No one checked if food was okay, no one came back and asked if we would like more drinks. Ribs and short rib beef were nice but nearly £3 for a dozen french fries I'd consider a lot. All in all left rather disappointed and wouldn't go back. There seemed to be little care given and when there are so many other restaurants around, especially at Festival Leisure Park, you can go elsewhere and feel more appreciated as a customer.

Downham Arms is famous for flame-grilled food and sizzling skillets. All of our steaks are 28 day matured and there's nowhere better to get a pint when the football's on! We offer a welcoming and friendly atmosphere, unbeatable value and a great place to
Having recently moved into area, trying a few local places and this evening we came to Downham Arms.....and so glad we did!.As soon as we arrived we felt comfortable, and welcomed. Menu is varied and great choice of drinks.Had sharer starter and bacon popcorn at first, and both were lovely. For mains my wife had mixed grill, and kids had steak. The steaks were cooked to perfection!.When I was looking at the menu, the manager came over and recommended the chick n mix challenge.....so I went for it. Was a lot of food, but was again cooked beautifully and so tasty!.For dessert we tried the epic choctastic sundaes and they were superb. All in all was a great night out and we will be back.....everyone was really friendly, and I cannot recommend this place highly enough.....already planning our return trip!Hey there!Thank you for the lovely comments and weâre all glad you had a great evening. We look forward to welcoming you back soon.

All staff are very accommodating and friendly, the food is worth waiting for as it comes out piping hot and it tastes as good as it looks. They have good deals, good menus. I am always recommending them where and if I can. Ignore the decor because it is the staff and food which is the main thing to go there for. Brilliant through and through. All staff deserve a mention because they work so well as a team. So....a big thanks to......Emma, Katy, Lisa, Monta, Claire & Katie, well done all of you.

Went here for my birthday - we had no idea where to go, but this came up as good so gave it a whirl. From the outside it looked like a local pub for local people, but once inside, it was brilliant. Attentive friendly staff, amazing food, reasonably priced and really nice. We'll be back I'm sure!

We stopped for lunch on a rare day off together. He had a ploughmanâs like none weâd seen before...beautifully presented with thick sliced ham, a good selection of generously sized cheese wedges and pickles/garnish with baguette. Absolute heaven on a plate! I had a flatbread with halloumi which was lovely my only disappointment was that there could have been a better selection of salad leaves. Very tasty & reasonably priced. Huge portions! Thank you.
