2019 NY's resolution was to give up replying to reviews as I think this site has lost it's relevance. But by popular demand we're back! The Bristol is a fabulous seafront pub with panoramic sea views, great traditional food and wonderful Sunday lunches. C

Excellent service, very enjoyable, tasty and reasonably priced food. However, our waiter should have warned us that the fish pie was dangerously hot, as it burned my wife’s lip. Unfortunately, I had forgotten that after last year’s visit I had vowed not to return because of dogs being allowed on the upholstered chairs and benches with their muzzles at the tables. Last year our waitress told us the upholstery is cleaned every day, but I noticed it’s not cleaned after each dog’s rear end has been on it during an evening. Same thing this time. Disgusting! Won’t be back. Awaiting pompous owners’ response. Thanks for the personal abuse and your libellous comments on hygiene. I'd like to refer you to B&H Environmental Health ratings where we score top marks for both kitchen and front of house. The fresh fish in your wife's pie was cooked to order in an oven which has to be hot for the process to work. Not really rocket science and to date a warning has only seemed necessary for young children. You hate dogs, I get it, but we don't and our reputation for cleanliness is as spotless as the pub. I'm glad you enjoyed the excellent service, tasty and reasonably priced food. I'd hate to think what you may have written had your visit not been 'very enjoyable'.Sincerely, pompous owner.

I have to say that l do not eat out. However, saying this, l have witnessed on very many occasions the quality and quantity of the food that is served up to the customers in my opinion is top class. The staff all work hard as a team and are always smiling. They are all very helpful and very polite all the way up to the top of which are a nice couple who run the pub. I would strongly recommend a visit when you can. Sid Berry (Saltdean)

Great little wine cafe in downtown Brighton. As an Italian wine freak I'm usually disappointed in the selection and expected the same from a wine cafe in England. I mean beer is really the focus for the country after all. Was I in for a surprise. Luca and Megan were so helpful and friendly and their choice was spot on. Not expensive to break the bank AND good enough in flavor and body to make even me happy!! Tapas were also great. Friendly place and I'd go again if I'm ever in Brighton again!! Cheers!!

Been here a couple of times before and always found the bar staff more than accommodating on this occasion the bar tender (Luke maybe) went out of his way to mix a cocktail to our taste exactly and what a cocktail it was! Unfortunately as we were enjoying that cocktail outside we had a rather furious Man come out of the pub to ask us to stop talking as loudly outside as he lived above and couldn’t here his tv! I assumed he was a resident of the street and when we asked the bartender if he had many problems with the tenant upstairs we were told he’s in fact the owner! If having a chat at 8.45pm is interrupting love island for you babe I think you might be in the wrong business. Any who last time we or anyone else I know in hospitality will waste our penny’s there’s.Thank you for your review Rose. I came down to ask you to keep the noise down because of not only the volume but the language being used. We take the noise to our neighbours very seriously regardless of time, our next door neighbours have 2 small children. The fact the guy in your group apologised and stated it was his fault I would have thought that was enough but people love a bit more power behind a keyboard. I would have happily come down and talked to you if you thought I was being unfair but with the volume and language I know I wasn't.

Second time we've been here in a few weeks. Great carvery, easy going and friendly atmosphere. You are served beef, pork, or turkey (or some of all three), and a Yorkshire pudding. You then serve yourself from roast potatoes, mash, carrots and peas, cheesey cauliflower and brocoli, red cabbage, and gravy. There's also decent selection of sauces, horseradish, cranberry, mustard etc. Good beers and good food. Happy days. Getting served in seconds is always tempting on a Sunday when time is limited. We'll be back, maybe check the garden out next time.

You could easily miss this little pub but shame on you if you do. The friendliest little place in town. Miss B's Sunday roast is sublime. Firstly, the veggie option is a homemade nut roast;I'm sick of pubs offering pastry ('cause you really need carbs with your carbs). You get a pot of cheese sauce, a jug of gravy and a really generous amount of food. Neil is the eccentric friendly host that keeps everything running smoothly and happily.

Before posting on Tripadvisor I usually look at other reports to see if my experience conforms to the average. As I've been here before and the experience was acceptable, it seems yesterday may have been a bad day.The Scots have a reputation for being 'dour', that being the word often used. In my experience, the reputation is undeserved, but the Scottish barman on duty today lived up to it.I went to meet two friends at lunchtime. I went in and requested my drink politely and was served. Then the other friend arrived, greeted the barman, and claimed that the barman ignored him. As he is deaf in one ear that may not have been the case but the barman was pretty surly about the incident. When I paid for my drink, since I recently came back from Scotland I had some Scottish banknotes, which a lot of people in England won't take, so I took a £5 out, saying to the barman :"As you're a Scotsman I assume you'll be OK with this."His reply was :"No I won't as there are too many fakes around."That may well be true but it was the hostile and unfriendly way he said it that grated. I then said the three of us would like some lunch or bar snacks, and in the same ungracious manner he said :"I'm here on my own and I've already got three people for lunch and I'm not doing food."On reflection, he wasn't dour, he was sour and borderline rude. We left and went round the corner and had a delightful lunch at Open Art Cafe where we were made to feel most welcome. I've never been a great fan of Greene King but after this experience, and despite being a shareholder, I will no longer darken their doorsteps. No doubt the landlord will place an aggressive reply to this report, as seems to be the case when a negative report is posted, but I know enough about the hospitality industry to know whether someone should be working in it, and this man should not.Dear Mike,Apologies for the delay responding. The contents of your review are noted and I'm sorry to hear of your poor experience. I would hope that you will not find this response aggressive - that has never been an intention when responding although we will, of course, take the rightful opportunity to state our own perspective and will refute claims that are simply untrue. Unfortunately, some use review websites as a means of 'punishment' when they are disgruntled, regardless of whether they are justified or not.Since I was not present myself on this occasion, I have looked into your specific comments and I'm unclear on several points as the staff working the days leading up to your review are not recalling any of the points of your experience. To take them in order:Firstly, and most notably, we do not have any Scottish staff or any I can think of with an accent that might be construed as Scottish.Secondly, we have always accepted Scottish notes.Thirdly, from our records, we have been serving numerous lunches every day leading up to the date of your review (unless your review is some time after the event?) - I've looked at cctv footage but there's nothing that I can find that was helpful. On a point of clarification, Greene King are our landlords only - this is not a Greene King business, it is independently run by myself and my partner who have over 30 years experience and, for the last 8 years have been running the Black Horse, one of the most popular pubs in the area. Since you have looked at our reviews, you will see that the vast majority are actually positive so, it seems we're probably in the right business!I'm glad that you enjoyed your experience with our friends at the Open Art Café - we use it often ourselves!Once again, I'm sorry to hear of your poor experience although I'm not sure that publicly declaring your disdain of Greene King pubs will do much for the value of your investment!Best wishes, John, Black Horse, Rottingdean.

Busby and Wilds is a family owned, neighborhood public house, which prides itself on its quality of ingredients; all freshly prepared to order. We have a love of Food and Drink, all at a reasonable price in a relaxed and comfortable atmosphere.

I visited Busby and Wilds for a Sunday roast, having heard great things about their Sunday food- and I came away with mixed feelings. We were seated immediately (having booked) but our table by the door wasn’t that great for one of our party who was disabled (she kept on having to get up to let people out). In addition, the service was extreeeeeemely slow.. the lady who served us was super friendly and nice, but in all it took over 3 hours for us to have a main course and dessert. This was fine at the time as it was lovely to catch up with my friends, but I certainly wouldn’t have been pleased if the food hadn’t been so good! I would say that this was the best roast I’ve had in Brighton, and the price wasn’t all too different from any other pub- so would absolutely recommend on this front.100% would go again, in the hope that we wouldn’t have so wait so long and the roast incident was a one off, but not a great experience from a time keeping perspective! I apologies to Laura that the service was disappointing, we always try our hardest and occasionally fail- this was a very rare Sunday that I personally had taken off and perhaps the staff got slightly busier than we expected. An email to express your concerns could have been dealt with in a much more productive way and something that I could have personally looked in to and tried to recompense. Please notify on booking any seating requirements as a table plan is made for the whole day and very hard to change last minute.

The place opened slightly unprepared at noon. We had booked a table but there was probably no need. The service was average, the food poor. A very expensive steak was virtually uneatably tough. The fish dish was passable but not fresh, surprising given that this venue is on the coast.
