The Wheel is a traditional English Pub that dates back to the Late 1700's. We are situated in the heart of The Chilterns with great walks and very near Hughenden Manor. We are an award winning Real Ale Pub, that also has awards for food. The pub has two g
This is quite possibly the friendliest pub I have EVER been to. The staff could not have been more welcoming and accommodating. Nothing was too much trouble. We had phoned ahead because we wanted to sleep in our motorhome overnight in the car park. We arrived later than planned but this was not at all a problem for the pub. They had coned off an area in the car park right next to the door to the bar. As soon as we arrived, the landlord Mark came out to guide us in and welcome us. As we entered the pub we found that a table had already been set aside for us and the staff were very quick to attend to us with drinks and a food menu. The food was traditional British pub food. Just what I wanted! As a vegetarian I fully understand that my options are always likely to be quite restricted. I chose the leek and pasta bake. It was gorgeous. So much flavour. It really hit the spot. There was also a good selection of real ales, always a plus for me. I had three pints of a very agreeable brew from the Tring brewery. I am always wary of the possibility of country pubs being posh and exclusive; I need not have been concerned.....in this place any persons from bikers to high court judges would feel very welcome. As well as the staff, all the customers were cheerful, friendly and very welcoming. These even extended to the dogs! These too could not have been more gentle. This is a very dog friendly pub. I must also make special mention of Claire the landlady. A lovely, warm, friendly lady who even though it was a busy evening, made time to sit with us and chat, giving us advice about where to walk our dog and some of the local attractions. One of these included Hughenden Manor, which was a treat not to be missed. We really enjoyed our stay at The Wheel and will will 100% be returning.

Poor acoustics makes it very noisy when busy which tends to spoil a good meal. Second visit was much better and you could enjoy the food. Very helpful and friendly.Hi Arthur,Thanks for leaving your review.Iâm not sure on timings between your first visit and second, but we have put up acoustic panels to absorb some of the noise, which has made a big difference.Really pleased you enjoyed the food and service. We look forward to seeing you again soon.Steve & All The Team

We visited today with our daughter. We haven't been there for a while. The roast dinners are amazing and are preceeded by one of the best rolls and butter first. The service is excellent with all staff friendly and completely efficient. I cannot recommend this place enough and often tell others about it. The only complaint i have is that they don't have a gratitude button on the payment machine. We rarely carry cash and then can't tip the hard working staff. Thank you to all the workers. Our visits to The Peacock are always amazing with delicious food. What are you waiting for? Book yourselves in now!

A village pub for everyone, the Golden Cross is in a superb area of the Chiltern hills countryside, surrounded by lots of public footpaths it is an ideal place to start, finish or stop for a break on your country walk or road trip. Our menu has been creat
Visited here with family and friends - five of us in total had Sunday lunch of 2 courses and tea and coffee for less than £100.Some might read this and think it too cheap but wait, give this place a go.The roast dinners were beautifully cooked - alright they gas Aunt Bessie's Yorkshire puddings - but the lamb and beef was excellent and came with lots of veg and gravy. The desserts are cheap but cheerful and slid down easily. None of them even started to stretch the imagination. Good value, good sized portions.Pleasant little pub I drove past for years and never entered until Sunday but will drop in again when passing.

An old coaching inn specializing in good food and a great atmosphere. We have a large garden, have regular band nights (Saturday)and serve food from midday until 10pm....Our food is traditional pub grub...Our menu is flexible as our main aim is to please
Visited this afternoon for a late lunch. Dashwood Rarebit:This is actually a baguette toasted cheese and tomato toasty with a fried egg, rarebit should contain mustard and Worcester sauce. This most definitely didnât. Before you think, well, this is. DASHWOOD rarebit, that would be like advertising a DASHWOOD cheeseburger without cheese. The dish came with a small Ramekin of crisps and a small chopped salad, at £9.50 this might be acceptable if it was what it was advertised to be, but it wasnât. Second item was a wrap, accompanied by fries and a small chopped salad, nothing remarkable apart from being served on a deeply cracked wooden board - perfect for bacteria harbouring. We always support local business but I am afraid you offered us very little: upon entering the young man behind the bar looked at us and looked away, fortunately I was able to catch his attention at the other end of the bar and establish we could sit anywhere and got menus. Above items ordered at 2.32pm (according to your receipt), at 3.10pm we thought we have better ask politely if the order was ok, the young man didnât even enter the kitchen but fortunately 4 minutes later, the wrap meal arrived, followed by the rarebit, itâs not a personal criticism but can two plates not be carried at once? No apology for the wait, no offer of condiments or where we might find them.Landlord, while you might suggest you are not a fast food establishment (youâre not as good actually) and while you might question why we didnât state at the time of ordering we needed food quicker than 42 minutes (how long does it take to make a sandwich and wrap ) but it was not worth (in both contexts) the wait. Your welcome, service, attention, interest in us as a customer were non existent, we didnât even get a âthanksâ or âgoodbyeâ when leaving, donât misinterpret this like we have died in a ditch because someone didnât say hello or goodbye, but your service is poor, your food poor, your cleanliness poor and I am poor for being fleeced for over £20. To state the obvious first, we are disappointed to receive any negative appraisal of our Pub, My staff take great pride, and naturally enjoy any appreciation of what they do. People leave messages on social media for all sorts of reasons usually they are supported by a willingness to help others in the choice of destinations, however some are written for other reasons best known to the author..............Upon reading this remarkably long and damning report of your experience, I am at a loss to ascertain the purpose of this essay. Having read other reviews of yours I feel we got off lightly. Any culinary dish will sound relatively less appetizing when broken down into a list of its formula....., to question a recipe based on another and suggest that it could have been different in a manner to criticize it is one thing, but it seems that nothing at all about our offerings was in any way, adequate for your particular tastes. We serve many different types of customers in a variety of different circumstances sometimes after a busy lunch the garden can suffer from deposits left by groups, which means that we cannot always find the necessary time to litter pick the garden interstitially...... The time factor is worth commenting on and given that customer estimates are often taken from the time of arrival rather than starting the "waiting" clock at the point of ordering, if indeed our service was slower than average i can assure that having removed all the gaming machine wide screen t.v's and boxed st video collections last month from the kitchen. I am confident that it was served as quick as we were able and apologize, unreservedly, if you felt it was too long before you were able to not enjoy our food , not reflected by the small ammount left on the bacteria infested boards.. Having suggested that we are worse than a fast food outlet you may take comfort from the wider choice of venues now made available to you for your custom. Our staff were pleased to receive a five star rating from the council recently. I can only assume you had considered the risk of being infected the obvious dangers of industrial pollution from nearby factories such as Chernobyl as you chose to sit in the garden, an area that we do not clean meticulously every day with sanitizer. Fortunately for us we are very well thought of by the vast majority of our valued patrons many of which give us the opportunity of enhancing their visits with suggestions at the time of service. sadly in this case I can only respond to a suprise criticism after the event and very much in the public domain. I can only apologize for our "poor"treatment of you and your colleague. You may also be pleased to note two things that have happened in order to prevent similar disappointments, the twenty pounds that we fleeced you for has gone a long way to giving the staff a much needed boot camp in order to make them sharper on travelling the length of the bar to serve and the remaining change is paying for a high pressure steam bidet for the lavatories in an attempt to improve our hygeine. Thank you for your input

Sadly, there are increasingly few pubs like this one left in the Chilterns as the more traditional inns either close or get turned into chic but overpriced gastropubs. The Hampden Arms remains untouched, much as it must have been fifty years ago or even earlier. The atmosphere is great, the decor is full of quirky character, the welcome and the service are both good and the food and beer are not just decent quality but sensibly priced. I had a beautifully tasty pint of Addlestones Cloudy Cider and a big plate of ham, eggs and chips. Definitely one of my favourites in the area.

Located in the picturesque village of Whiteleaf, The Red Lion is a small, traditional pub with a warm welcome and a good menu.We were going for a walk in the surrounding area, and intended to book for lunch before setting off. We arrived a few minutes early, and not only did they open up so we could book, they also let us use the loos and gave us permission to leave the car in their car park while we went on the walk. All very much appreciated. On our return a couple of hours later we were given another warm welcome, and settled down by the log fire to order lunch. Thereâs a wide choice of both food and drink on offer, and we opted for jacket potatoes followed by ice cream, and Aspall's cider to accompany it. The portions were generous and the prices very reasonable. It made a lovely end to our walk. The Red Lion has a lovely atmosphere and welcomes dogs as well as their owners. Would recommend.

My wife and I joined a friend for lunch at the Black Horse. The pub has an extensive menu and a really good specials board. The staff were very friendly and efficient and the ambiance of the pub was really nice. My wife and friend had the salmon fish cakes but my wife seemed to think the chef had forgotten to add the salmon as they were tasteless and there was no evidence of the fish. However I had the liver and bacon and it was as good as you would get anywhere. We will return but next time will avoid the fishcakes.sorry about the Fishcakes but they do tend to taste different as they are gluten Free and dairy free as stated on the menu board. I will mention this to the Chef hope to see you again soon Lynne

Ate lunch here yesterday, excellent quality and helpful , attentive staff. A popular place so if you prefer to sit at conventional tables and chairs rather than high stools and barrels, reserve. The folding front windows installed recently together with the sliding doors to the garden make it very airy and comfortable even on a very hot day .Hello Jan Thank you so much for taking the time to write a lovely review for us here at Dukes, we are so pleased you enjoyed your time here and look forward to hopefully welcoming you back again soon. Kind regards Louise
