The staff don't speak English but worked hard to understand us. A clean, well-provided room and quite good value.

I had had a wonderful day tracking down remarkable monuments in the local area and missed lunch, so was looking in Tunceli, my base for the night, for a restaurant that would provide both liquid refreshment and a sustaining meal. It was not long before Celal Dogan appealed to me more than any other restaurant that evening, partly because of the excellent menu, partly because alcohol could be accessed and partly because of its riverside location. I opted to eat on the patio beside the river where fish rose to the surface to eat flies and the sun glistened on the gently flowing water. I discussed the menu with two very helpful waiters, confirmed that prices were reasonable and ordered a lamb saç kavurma and a half litre of Tuborg beer. Bread and a salad were provided free of cost. The saç kavurma, one of my favourite Turkish dishes, was the best I have had for at least four years and the beer was just what a thirsty body craved the most. I noticed that diners, male as well as female, at other tables, who consumed a mixture of mezes, salads and grilled meats, had dishes that looked just as appetising. This is a superb restaurant in one of Turkey's least visited but friendliest provincial capitals. If in the area, make sure that you eat here whether merely passing through or staying overnight!
