Denny's

Reviewed By trinidymples1

I usually reserve my reviews of local restaurants until I've visited them at least twice. Last night was a 3rd and final trip to Denny's in Maraval. What I find ironic is that I have no complaints about the quality of the food I've received on any of the 3 occasions, the chefs were efficient, way quicker than the serving staff and the food was great. That's where the positive feedback ends. The service here has made me realize that you can get horrible treatment that rivals that of fast food chains like KFC and Church's Chicken in places you least expect it. Last night, as my boyfriend and I entered Denny's there was no hostess to greet us when we entered; what it did have though, was a woman cashing out a customer that avoided eye contact with us as we stood there waiting to be acknowledged. When another waitress came to the desk, also clearly not the hostess, she exchanged words with the one cashing who informed her to seat us anywhere. Did I mention that no one has actually said anything like "good evening" or "welcome to Denny's" or even made eye contact as we were standing there waiting. When we were finally seated we were left to wait for 48 minutes for our waitress. At the 16 minute mark a passing waiter advised us that "Darcelle" will be with us shortly. We didn't see Darcelle until 32 minutes after that. What was amusing was that upon her arrival she told us no one told her we were waiting but she had another table that had people when we arrived so she also didn't check them for that length of time. The staff in general spend so much time congregating and gossiping in full view of customers while avoiding any eye contact with us it's almost entertaining to watch. We got our cooked and tasty food in less than half the time we waited for service, which I was amazed by, since the cooks seem to be the only ones who have a steady flow of work to do. As I mentioned before, this is my 3rd visit and the service got worse each time I've gone. The wait staff will only attend to the tables they are assigned to, so we have had to wait for ours to run an errand before we could place a take away order as no on else would put it in. I also observed that some of the staff believe that the dress code of Denny's is open to interpretation. I've seen Casino worker length skirts, cleavage spilling shirts and my favourite one was last night's waiter with his top 2 buttons on his shirt open to reveal some chest and vest, pants that fit like stockings with a blue bandana positioned to show in his back pocket. The attitude towards their job in general reflects either poor pay, poor staff incentives or they simply were not trained on customer service. The staff clearly isn't happy working there and it shows. The ladies room floor was wet on every occasion I've been there and I have a foot injury that has me wearing a special boot which means I was quite upset when I almost slipped because of the floors. The bin was overflowing with trash. The tables are sort of cleaned, which means that there are stray crumbs and water marks on the tables. The smiles are missing. I will not be returning to this restaurant even though the food is good, the poor service leaves a sour taste in my mouth.

This visit was a celebration. Although reservations were made ahead of time, seating arrangements had to be adjusted on two occasions. The staff were friendly. Always checking our needs. Some meals took a little longer to arrive that others. Some were given to the wrong persons, but quickly adjusted. Other than that and the noisy atmosphere one can enjoy themselves.

This place is amazing. Wonderful location with parking if you have a car and wonderful food. Very professional attentive waiters, best we have come across in Trinidad and Tobago and quick and efficient service. Beautiful interiors again best we have come across.Delicious food so much so we had 2 lunches at the pub bar downstairs. Quite reasonable priced too given the quality. If you’re lucky Jenny herself might wander over to say hi and she’s an amazing hostess. Highly recommended.

Been here a few times and I'm always impressed with the nice ambience, good food, friendly service and amazing cocktails. The Bellini and Queen's Park Swizzler are definitely worth mentioning and I'd encourage anyone to try them...again and again!! Lots of tvs on different sport channels so a great place to come chill with friends to catch a game or just relax. I already see this being our go-to spot to hang out.

We found this urban oasis of a wine bar whilst staying at the Hilton and having to walk up to the Normandie Hotel for the pool every day. This is a hidden gem in Port of Spain for any wine lovers. The selection of wines is incredible and the quality is exceptional. Prices are very reasonable too. We enjoyed several Chardonnays including a sublime 2009 Chablis and some very nice Spanish Whites. They also serve dinner here too and we would highly recommend lunch here for any true Cosmopolitans - what nice owners and staff - fantastic hosts. Thank you!

Trotters

Reviewed By The_Concierge_8

We have visited 4 times since introduction of their new menu and I’m not happy to report that the consistency and standards have dropped somewhat. I’m confused as to why they would remove popular items to make room for unenticing things. Some changes mystify me like removal of crab cakes from their menu! We used to love their crab cakes and would go there just to have them. But it is certainly not because they no longer stock crab meat, as they still offer crab wantons! How bizarre! We also loved their fried onion bloom with various dipping sauces and that has gone too. Such a simple and quick-preparation item, and poof…disappeared from the menu! Also, there are long-preparation items on the menu now like the two sushi rolls, but it is often not available as perhaps only certain chefs on duty can prep those special items. And when they do have it, you’ve got to really love it bad to wait for it as it takes at least 45 minutes to prepare! I’m confused as to why they would remove simple-prep offerings and add items that require more time and effort to prepare? It just doesn’t make any sense to me. I still love the staff and would love to continue giving them my support but as my husband would say….’why change something that doesn’t need changing?’ There used to be a nice football vibe in Trotters on a Saturday and on this occasion, we walked in with no game on the main screen (yes, believe it or not!) and whilst they were willing to put on what we wanted to see in our dining area, there was zero volume. Gone is the upbeat music too so the place just seems dead and of now lacks the vibrant atmosphere. I would honestly say that I’m a fan of the old Trotters. Bring back the old Trotters please!
