Korkeasaari Zoo is home to 150 animal species and almost 1000 plant species that show the diversity of nature. Korkeasaari Zoo is one of the few zoos located on an island: you can take a 20 min ferry ride (during summer) or a bus (no 16) from central Helsinki to the zoo. It is the perfect place to visit due to its natural environment, animals and history. The zoo was established in 1889 and is one of the oldest zoos in the world. Korkeasaari Zoo also participates in the work to protect the habitats in the original homes of the various species. Korkeasaari Zoo’s mission is to work towards preserving biodiversity. The zoo is open every day of the year. At least one restaurant open all year round, more services during summer. Outdoor and indoor picnic areas and places for grilling. Free map at the entrance.
We visited the zoo today and found 3 options as to how to get there. You can either take the car and park in the zoo car park, go by metro to Kalasatama and then take a bus number 16 or you can take the zoo ferry from the Central Market Square. We decided to take the car park option which was a mistake, as it seemed miles to walk, actually about a kilometre. I would take the metro and bus 16 next time, which takes you almost to the door. Once past the ticket office, 16 euros or so for adults, we walked across a bridge to the island itself. We found ourselves on an education trail, small notices telling interesting facts of nature every here and there. Well kept, very neat and tidy. Then we got to the animals, the lions were first, in a well kept large enclosure. They were right at the back and we could just about see them in the distance. Now, here's the thing and the reason for my title. The enclosures are designed so that the Animal's can show themselves if they want and I suppose we the visitors need to stay a little longer to try to spot them. It's almost like in the wild, you don't expect the animals to be seen straight away. OK, we were not so lucky with the lions this time, but later on the tiger more than made up for this, he really put on a show. Also we found the staff very friendly and willing to answer questions. It was at the Yak pen, where a young lady was feeding them with fresh grass. Whilst we were talking with her some little girls came up with questions and she made time for them also. After looking at various other birds and animals we looked for somewhere to eat. The main restaurant was a big wooden building in the middle of the island. A nice building with side rooms where people could eat their own food. The restaurant itself offered a buffet, with adult and children's dishes. We voted the food very good and once again the staff very welcoming and friendly. The zoo has many Peacocks walking around free and well used to the visitors. Very child orientated, but good for adults too, lots of information in English. The Animals looked very contented and healthy. Whatever your thoughts are on zoosgive this one a try. My Grandson loved it.

I had a great time with my girlfriend! We started our tour two hours before the closing time so it wasn't too crowded and we could roam the exhibition in peace. We got to see the seahorses being fed. The personnel was easy to approach, they actively offered their insights and help without being pushy.
