With its rich cultural heritage from Native American and Spanish settlers, New Mexico has been both a Spanish colony and a Mexican colony, and still retains a strong individual identity within the United States. The landscape is breathtaking, the food incredible, and there is a thriving cultural scene, all of which makes New Mexico, and Santa Fe in particular, a great place all year long.

New Mexico Wildlife Center is a great place to visit to see and learn about native wildlife. Located only 20 minutes from Santa Fe, you can see hawks, owls, bobcats, turtles, and other animals up close. Bring a picnic lunch and enjoy the view and gardens as well. Live animal programs available at certain times of the year; call for more information or to schedule a program/tour for a large group.

Park complex offering three main sections the whole family can enjoy: Albuquerque Aquarium, Rio Grande Botanic Garden and Rio Grande Zoo.
It was a really nice visit. grand daughter 2 1/2 really liked the bugarium (sp?), trains and heritage farm. Butterfly house had closed for season the week before we went. Older married children liked the Japanese garden. I would like to go back and spend more time.

You can get at the zoo with a small old time train from the Botanical garden/ aquarium. Is very informative and educative for kids, and there are plenty of other things to do if you need a break from walking around the animals enclosures, such as picnic areas, shops with foods, drinks and keepsakes, clean restrooms and water fountains.

We loved this place - such a unique, different experience! So Many Bugs, so little time. Very well laid out. This building is within the Botanical Garden, so a great chance to see both. They both happen to be right next to the Aquarium (connected via a large shared patio), so you can see a lot within the same general area. The Bugarium building has restrooms.

Overlooking the Pecos River Valley, this fascinating park exhibits the varied plant and animal life of the arid Chihuahuan Desert region. Visitors can observe caged animals like snakes, lizards and birds of prey, plus larger animals such as bison and antelope, which are held in pens. Or walk along a nature trail past cacti, agaves, yuccas and other native plant life.
This is a one of a kind place for all ages. Beautiful plant life of the region and many species of animal life found in this area. The paths walk you through a part of the Chihuahuan Desert with ease on a paved trail outside. Wonderful afternoon for families with kids of school age and above. Inside they have many displays of the local area giving everyone a view of natural beauty found right in own back yard. It is a short drive , five minutes or so from the bottom of the hill in Carlsbad to where is located overlooking the city. Grat time for all!

Alameda Park Zoo is the oldest Zoo in the Southwest.
Becca (Education Staff) was awesome! Diverse array of animals given the small size! Really enjoyed feeding the birds! Well worth an hour or two of your day!

Where else can you get so close to aquatic deep sea creatures here in the desert? This is a great aquarium for a city like Albuquerque. It supplements the zoo and has many kid friendly exhibits. My favorite is the jellyfish display.
