This university is universally known as "Shih Da." Since the Japanese colonial era (1895-1945), Shih Da has educated thousands of teachers, like my sister-in-law. Her family was not well off, but she was bright and she worked hard, so she won a scholarship to Shih Da. She became a high school history teacher, a worthy achievement. The term "Normal" dates from the Japanese era. A "normal university" trains teachers. Teachers are greatly respected in Chinese society and a Shih Da graduate could look forward to a comfortable and esteemed career, and a generous pension.

Fu Jen University is known universally as "Fu Da." Fu Da is a private university, and so its fees are expensive. There's a well-known saying "Fu Da you mei nyu" or to translate "Fu Da has pretty girls." A friend of mine who teaches at Fu Da says that this is true, and most female students take care with their appearance. Fu Da is one of the largest private universities in Taiwan and maintains high academic standards.

The minimalist buildings of Shih Chien University (SCU) were completed using the emerging “exposed concrete surface method” that primarily leaves concrete structures unpainted and un-tiled after the casting mold is removed, to preserve the natural texture of the construction materials (bare concrete, exposed aggregate, steel, glass and metals) in a harmonious architectural fashion. The method, using bare concrete is as the main material, has been applied to the Tung-Min Memorial Hall that houses the College of Design, the revamped Library and Information Building, and the new Sport Center. Students from the Department of Fashion Design, an academic highlight of SCU, are able to freely present their works in multiple venues around the department building, such as the stairwells, bathrooms, or anywhere else they please, in pursuit of their creative vision.

Tsing Hua University was established in Beijing then transferred to Taiwan in 1949 with the retreating Nationalists. The college is set in a beautiful campus just outside of Hsinchu City. The lake is especially attractive, it is well supplied with large koi, which have marvelously varied colors. The gazebo on the tranquil lake which is very peaceful. It's easy to spend an hour of so just wandering around. By the way, the lake is deep and treacherous, swimming and fishing are forbidden. The campus has varied wildlife, including squirrels. Please do not feed the animals. Tsing Hua is best known for its engineering faculty, but it covers a wide range of academic disciplines.
